Paul Mullin ends unwanted streak, star given new role and more – three Wrexham predictions for Northampton clash

After their EFL Trophy success in midweek, Wrexham return to action against Northampton Town on Saturday.

Wrexham beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 on Tuesday, securing themselves a place in the semi-final of the EFL Trophy where they will face Peterborough United.

Phil Parkinson must now turn his attention back to League One and the intense battle for automatic promotion.

Stockport County have climbed to within a point of Wrexham following the midweek fixtures but have played two more games.

But Wycombe Wanderers remain four points clear in second, meaning a win over 17th-place Northampton Town is a must.

Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash, we have picked up three things that could happen.

Paul Mullin scores against Northampton Town

After two cup matches in a row, it’s hard to pick exactly who Parkinson will select as his two striker options against Northampton.

The Wrexham manager now has seven different stars, eight if you include Elliot Lee, at his disposal but fans are no doubt keen to see Paul Mullin return.

Mullin had a minor shin injury but after sitting out the last two fixtures, could make his return over the weekend.

Despite being a prolific goalscorer wherever he’s played, the 30-year-old has not scored against Northampton since all the way back in January 2016 when he was plying his trade with Morecambe.

That is his only goal against the club in five outings – a pretty poor streak given how clinical he usually is in front of goal.

The striker needs to prove himself amid fresh competition and poor recent form, however, so Saturday would be a great time for him to score.

Ryan Longman given new Wrexham role vs Northampton

Ryan Longman has been a revelation since completing his January transfer from Hull City.

The wing-back has three assists for the Welsh outfit already and does deserve to keep his place in the eleven.

However, Ryan Barnett can’t really be dropped given his importance to the squad but Parkinson spoke about Longman’s Wrexham role recently, confirming he can play on the left as well.

As a result, we could see the ex-Hull ace line out on the left of the back five in place of James McClean this weekend.

Phil Parkinson rewards Wrexham star’s return to form

After a howler against Stevenage, Arthur Okonkwo lost his place in the league to Mark Howard for the Crawley Town win.

The former Arsenal man was between the sticks for Wrexham’s two recent cup meetings, however, and was much improved against Bolton.

In turn, Parkinson should be looking to reinstate Okonkwo as his first-choice keeper in League One.
