Wrexham have let go of their fair share of players in the last few years, one of which is still without a club.

The Red Dragons’ rise up the EFL ladder has been nothing short of remarkable in the last few years.

However, now Wrexham are playing in League One and pushing for a place in the Championship, the quality of the squad has obviously had to improve.

With nine players signed in the 2024 summer transfer window, the likes of Aaron Hayden, Luke Young, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Scott Butler and Owen Cushion were let go.

Meanwhile, Wrexham let Anthony Forde leave on deadline day earlier this month and James Jones also departed for Burton Albion.

Shaun Harvey sent a message to the players released by the Red Dragons over the summer, a number of which have gone on to enjoy success elsewhere.

Rob Lainton still without club after Wrexham release

However, one former Wrexham ace who was let go in the summer still hasn’t found himself a new club.

After a brief loan spell, Rob Lainton joined the Welsh outfit on a free transfer in November 2018.

He made 133 appearances for the now League One team in all competitions, keeping an impressive 60 clean sheets.

However, fans of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ documentary will be aware that the 35-year-old had a number of injury issues while plying his trade at the Racecourse Ground.

Lainton was visibly upset after picking up two long-term injuries while filming of the documentary took place.

And though he clearly wanted to get back into the side, the quality of Wrexham’s team improved and the likes of Ben Foster and Arthur Okonkwo replaced him.

After nearly six years at the club, Lainton was released at the end of his contract on July 1st, 2024, and is still currently a free agent.

How other released Wrexham stars are getting on

While it’s sad Lainton is still yet to find a new club, Wrexham fans will be glad to see a number of their other former stars excelling elsewhere.

Young has impressed for Cheltenham Town throughout the 2024/25 season, scoring some spectacular goals.

Meanwhile, Ben Tozer looks likely to win promotion from the National League once more with Forest Green, who currently sit second in the division and two points off first with a game in hand.
