Paul Mullin made Wrexham history in 2024, Ollie Rathbone should take his crown in 2025

Paul Mullin will go down in history as perhaps one of the greatest players to ever line out for Wrexham.

While there have been no triumphant European nights in the Paul Mullin era, there’s no denying that his contribution to the club has been massive.

The Red Dragons had spent over a decade stuck in the National League prior to his arrival back in the summer of 2021.

But in no small part due to his insane goal record, Wrexham climbed out of the fifth tier, and two years later, are playing in League One for the first time since it was rebranded.

Mullin is one of Wrexham’s all-time record goal-scorers and his excellent record has been acknowledged by the club.

Paul Mullin made Wrexham history in 2024

As is evident in the table above, Mullin has been a goal-machine for Wrexham since he joined on a free transfer from Cambridge United.

The 30-year-old has been their biggest goal threat for many years and, as was to be expected, won a few personal awards as a result.

In fact, after another superb 2023/24 season, Mullin became the first player in the history of the club to win three Player of the Season awards.

This term, however, the accolade will have to go to someone else, given he’s only got three league goals this term and hasn’t even featured in their last five League One fixtures.

The obvious candidate right now is Ollie Rathone, who has been immense since his summer arrival from Rotherham United.

Rathbone is becoming Wrexham’s most important player, providing a high work rate, great defensive awareness, and plenty of goals from midfield.

Max Cleworth could also be considered for the prize but if he’s able to match his recent displays in the last two months of the season, it should be Rathbone who ends Mullin’s streak.

Every multiple-time Wrexham Player of the Season winner

There have been five players throughout history who have won the Wrexham Player of the Season award on more than one occasion.

Mullin added his second in 2023 to become the fifth and latest star to join the historic club.

The first player to do so, meanwhile, was Mike Williams, who won back-to-back awards in 1986 and 1987.

Mike Williams1986, 1987

There will be a new winner this season, but even if it’s not Rathbone, there’s no denying his first season in Wales has been amazing.
