Paul Mullin may have played his last game for Wrexham after what Phil Parkinson said about ‘outstanding’ star

Phil Parkinson has not been shy about axing big Wrexham names, and it looks as though Paul Mullin is next on the list.

The saga surrounding Paul Mullin and his Wrexham future has been ongoing for several months now.

The Red Dragons lost their first home game of the season on January 28th versus Stevenage with Mullin featuring.

A few days after that shock loss, Wrexham signed Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith, and we haven’t seen the 30-year-old make a single appearance since.

He was left on the bench during a 2-1 win over Mansfield Town, but apart from that, he has not featured in any of Wrexham’s most recent seven matchday squads.

Fans want Mullin back in the squad but history suggests Phil Parkinson’s mind is already made up.

Phil Parkinson axed key Wrexham player to win promotion, Paul Mullin could follow suit

Rumours of a fall out between Parkinson and Mullin have begun to emerge, but the reason for the striker’s snub may be a lot simpler.

Last season saw the Welsh outfit competing at the top end of League Two, aiming to secure another promotion.

After a successful spell in the National League, Ben Tozer began the campaign as a starting centre-back and even captained the Red Dragons on numerous occasions.

However, at the back end of the season, when Wrexham were in a tight battle for promotion, in which they ended up finishing second, Parkinson opted to take Tozer out of the team.

He featured in just two of the club’s last 17 League Two fixtures and didn’t make an appearance in any of their final 11 matches of 2023/24.

Tozer was then released by the Hollywood-owned club in the summer of 2024.

Mullin is seemingly on a very similar path, and if Parkinson was willing to do that to someone he trusted with the captain’s armband just months before, it seems likely the striker has now played his last game for Wrexham.

What Phil Parkinson said about Ben Tozer

As well as the stopper, Luke Young was also struggling for minutes at the end of the previous campaign before being released.

Parkinson called Tozer ‘outstanding’ in April of 2024 yet admitted at the same time there was a chance both players could be moved on, which they were.

He said: “There’s the possibility of players moving on and that is the hard part of any manager’s job but we also know that we’ve got to evolve as a club and we’ll try and do that.

“But as I just said to the lads in the dressing room that one of the key elements to our success this season has been the dressing room and the lads out of the team.”

“You know, Ben Tozer, who hasn’t played a lot recently, Luke Young hasn’t played, the professionalism has been outstanding. Outstanding, he’s driven the group on. Stockport will be in the same situation. I’m sure decisions have got to be made and we’ll just do them fairly and honestly.”

It’s an unfortunate situation, but it looks as though Mullin is now on the same path as the duo.
