Phil Parkinson could make the same mistake twice in summer window, Wrexham must start thinking long-term

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson could sleepwalk into another mistake this summer which could yet again prove to be costly.

With the summer transfer window underway, Wrexham will no doubt hit recruitment hard as they prepare for the Championship season.

After three successive promotions, Wrexham will likely need wholesale changes in several departments, especially with an emphasis on players with vast experience at both Premier League and Championship level.

Of course, this surge in recruitment will leave some players surplus to requirements, just like it did with Sam Dalby last season. For Phil Parkinson, it was no doubt a mistake to exile the striker, and there is every chance that the feat could be repeated with a fellow attacker.

Wrexham must not repeat Sam Dalby mistake with Mo Faal ahead of 2025/26 season

Wrexham have often suffered because of their excessive number attackers in the side; even Paul Mullin was unable to notch a decent amount of game time last season.

It is far from ideal when Parkinson has to severely limit the game time of some players, but even more so when it is a youngster with vast potential.

Take Sam Dalby, for example, he made the correct call for his personal career to move on to Dundee United where he showed that, if given the game time, he can perform at a high level and show goalscoring form. Whilst loan moves are often used to build a platform to then play for the parent club, the way Dalby was treated helped make up his mind.

That could easily happen once again this summer with Mo Faal. Last season, the 22-year-old was handed very little game time, and with promotion to the Championship, the prospect of playing will likely be minimal.

How Phil Parkinson should deal with Mo Faal

It would fully be understandable if Parkinson were to sanction a loan deal for Faal this summer. After all, with Wrexham’s likely recruitment drive, he will find himself low down the pecking order.

A route in the first team must be created, though, otherwise he will solely go elsewhere to build a platform for himself to move permanently on elsewhere.

There needs to be clarity on Faal’s prospects of playing for the first team, whether it is this season or the next, if he performs well away on loan. Without such a conversation, Parkinson will ultimately sleepwalk into making the same mistake he made that led to losing Dalby on a free transfer.
