Phil Parkinson could shock Wrexham fans at 7pm today by starting 16-touch player vs Shrewsbury Town

Wrexham are back in League One action this evening with a clash against rivals Shrewsbury Town.

The Red Dragons should be raring to go after an extended break this month.

Wrexham haven’t played since January 4th when Steven Fletcher came off the bench to score the winner against Peterborough United.

A lot has changed in League One since that time, including second-place Wycombe Wanderers being weakened.

They lost one of their best defenders when he was recalled from a loan spell, while manager Matt Bloomfield has now departed to take up a role in the Championship with Luton Town.

Wycombe also lost to Huddersfield Town and as a result, Wrexham can overtake them if they get any sort of positive result against Shrewsbury Town this evening.

Phil Parkinson has seen his side struggle on the road in 2024/25 and could make a surprising change to his starting eleven on Thursday to ensure a win is picked up.

How Phil Parkinson could shock Wrexham fans vs Shrewsbury Town

Wrexham are yet to taste defeat at the Racecourse Ground this term but have made a habit of dropping points away from home, including against weaker sides.

On paper, this should be an easy fixture for the Welsh team with Shrewsbury flirting with relegation in 2024/25.

However, though Wrexham will almost certainly dominate possession on the night, they may struggle to find the back of the net.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin have been Parkinson’s preferred striking duo in recent weeks but that could and should change versus Shrewsbury.

Fletcher only had 16 touches and completed four passes, as per Sofascore, when he came on for Palmer against Peterborough but was still able to score.

In turn, with Wrexham almost certainly expected to lack much attacking threat on the road tonight, Parkinson could shock fans be handing the Scotsman just his second League One start of the season.

Steven Fletcher Wrexham stats this season are impressive

The 37-year-old was last handed a start in the 1-0 defeat to Stevenage all the way back on October 1st.

His impact off the bench has been remarkable, however, with Fletcher setting a Wrexham record with his last goal.

He is now the club’s joint-top scoring centre-forward in the league this season and if he does have 60/70 minutes in his legs, Parkinson needs to start him on Thursday.
