Phil Parkinson could surprise everyone by benching three-time promotion winner vs Norwich

Wrexham are looking to earn their second win of the season when they take on Norwich City this weekend.

The Red Dragons suffered a harrowing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers last time out.

Wrexham were well off the pace at the Racecourse Ground and were once again exposed defensively.

It’s still early days, but it has become apparent that defensive issues are going to be their main problem this season.

While big chances being missed are a concern, Phil Parkinson has his team scoring a decent amount of goals in the Championship.

But if they are to avoid a relegation battle and push high up the table, they simply can’t keep conceding multiple goals in the majority of their matches.

In turn, Parkinson could make a change to his defence when Wrexham face Norwich City.

Phil Parkinson could start Dom Hyam ahead of Max Cleworth vs Norwich City

For much of the season so far, we have seen Conor Coady and Max Cleworth in the back-three.

Lewis Brunt began the season on the left, but he’s since been replaced in the eleven by summer signing Callum Doyle.

And given their recent issues, it would make some sense for Dom Hyam to now come into the eleven.

The Scotland international, who arrived on September 1, is an experienced Championship defender.

Cleworth, on the other hand, had never played second-tier football until 2025/26.

He came up through Wrexham’s youth ranks and was a key figure during their League One promotion campaign.

As is the case with every promotion, and especially this season, stars who were once so important often find themselves far down the pecking order following an influx of new talent.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham conceding goals

If and when Hyam is integrated into the side, Wrexham could end up with a completely new backline.

Liberato Cacace is injured at the moment but once he’s back, he will likely be the starting left-wing-back.

Issa Kabore is expected to debut this month as well, while the centre-backs moving forward could be Doyle, Coady and Hyam.

Whether that will fix the defensive issues remains to be seen, but something must change soon.

Parkinson commented on Wrexham conceding goals ahead of Norwich, saying: “It’s just moments. Did QPR cut us open time and time again?

“Not really, but in key moments they’ll probably say they were clinical, and in our key moments, we weren’t, but obviously all goals were avoidable.”
