Phil Parkinson must now prioritise signing ‘brilliant’ Wrexham target after George Dobson coup

Wrexham have been busy this summer but are expected to be in the market for further arrivals ahead of the League One campaign.

Three new faces have already arrived at Wrexham this transfer window, with Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt and George Dobson all agreeing deals to play at the Racecourse.

Phil Parkinson’s latest signing in Dobson provides great quality and League One experience in midfield.

Dobson has over 250 League One games under his belt and has previously worked with the manager during their time together at Sunderland.

The club is still looking to improve this window, but the former Charlton Athletic signing may now have raised doubts about a move for free agent Joe Morrell.

The Welsh international had previously been linked with a move to North Wales after confirming his Portsmouth exit. With Dobson added to an inflated midfield, another midfield arrival may now be less of a priority.

However, Parkinson should still look to bring the former Luton Town midfielder to Wrexham.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson should prioritise Joe Morrell signing

Despite having numerous midfield options Joe Morrell presents a brilliant opportunity to improve the squad.

Parkinson is looking for strength in depth in his squad. Morrell’s potential free transfer offers an upgrade on other midfield options at the Racecourse.

Wrexham will be stepping up in quality this year and others may struggle to get regular minutes.

Morrell, 27, has recently left Portsmouth who were promoted to the Championship last season.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has previously lauded the Welsh international.

Speaking to The News, Mousinho said: “Joe has been superb to have around the place this summer and is a brilliant character regardless of any situation going on, Joe has been great to have around.”

Parkinson should be keen to take up the opportunity to secure a player who has vast experience in League One and the Championship.

If the Red Dragons were able to add the former Bristol City midfielder to the squad he could provide alongside Dobson great experience and depth at the right level for Wrexham to progress.

A Wrexham departure would likely be needed for Morrell transfer

If the former Lincoln City midfielder did arrive at the Racecourse it is likely a midfield departure would be necessary.

With the level of quality expected to be higher next year, Parkinson may feel he needs an upgrade in his midfield options.

George Evans has recently signed a contract and is a big part of Parkinson’s plans going forward.

Elliot Lee is a vital member of the squad and Andy Cannon was a consistent performer last season.

Leaving Jordan Davies and James Jones as two possible players the club could look to move on.

Both players have previously played a big part in the squad, but in recent seasons have played more of a rotational role. The former has struggled with injuries and may still have a lot to offer if he can remain fit.

Jones is 28 years old and may look to seek more game time elsewhere if other quality additions arrive in North Wales.

With Morrell being available on a free transfer, the club may feel it is an opportunity too good to miss.
