Phil Parkinson must unleash ‘immense’ Wrexham star to dominate Forest Green Rovers tonight

Wrexham are back in League Two action tonight as they take on Forest Green Rovers.

Wrexham suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of play-off-chasing Gillingham on Saturday.

This was their fifth loss in eight matches and their third defeat in five away from home.

Travel sickness has eaten up Phil Parkinson’s side throughout this season and it’s something they must improve upon if they are to get promoted.

The Reds are 13th in the away form table and have lacked that killer edge in front of goal with Paul Mullin failing to score in his last seven league matches.

Mullin is one player that Parkinson could introduce back into the fold against Forest Green while another is captain Luke Young, who was benched at the Priestfield Stadium.

The changes Phil Parkinson could make v Forest Green Rovers

Young missed out in place of the returning Elliot Lee against Gillingham as James McClean continued in his role as a central midfielder.

With only three days since Wrexham were last in action, Parkinson will likely make several changes to freshen up proceedings.

Of course, veteran Stephen Fletcher could do with a rest in place of Mullin and McClean could move back to his usual left-back position.

He was simply incredible there against Notts County and while replacing Jacob Mendy is a difficult call to make, especially after he received praise from Parkinson, it’s a move that could allow Young to come back into midfield.

Why Luke Young should start v Forest Green

After reaching a milestone 250 appearances for Wrexham and marking it by assisting McClean against MK Dons, Young was unfortunate to get left out of the starting XI against the Gills.

In the draw against the Dons, he was hailed as “immense” after receiving the highest match rating on the field (7.4), creating two big chances and accurately placed four long balls.

The quality he provided to the forward players in that fixture was missed on Saturday while his presence as captain was equally needed.

Whether the decision to drop the 31-year-old was down to giving him a rest or purely tactical remains to be seen, but he certainly deserves a place alongside Andy Cannon and Lee in midfield tonight.

His inclusion would make sense as Wrexham need someone level-headed to martial the rest of the squad and away from home, it’s important to have players who are strong in duels and are positionally aware on the pitch.

Young convincingly ticks both of those boxes and can help lead the Reds to an important victory.
