Phil Parkinson will be furious at what the EFL have just done ahead of Wrexham clash with Mansfield Town

Wrexham are set to clash with Mansfield Town in a League One meeting on Sunday afternoon.

Wrexham are on a torrid run of form at the moment that has seen fan anger toward Phil Parkinson begin to grow.

The Red Dragons have won just two of their league fixtures in 2025 so far and have paid the price in the promotion race.

Wycombe Wanderers looked like they could fall off in January after a manager change and a couple of key stars leaving.

And while their form hasn’t been perfect, Wrexham’s has been even worse in the league, allowing Wycombe to open up a five-point gap.

On paper, Mansfield Town is the perfect game for the Red Dragons to bounce back, however, as they have failed to win any of their last five matches.

Phil Parkinson will be furious at referee for Mansfield Town vs Wrexham

However, one decision made by the EFL this week is likely to draw the ire of Parkinson ahead of Sunday’s clash.

The EFL have now confirmed the referee appoints for every League One fixture this weekend and Wrexham have managed to land themselves Matt Corlett.

Parkinson hit out at Corlett in 2024 following a 0-0 draw with Harrogate Town in League Two.

Post-match, the Wrexham boss claimed the referee made their ball-boys nervous and labelled his approach as ‘quite bizarre’.

He said: “Several things tonight with the officials… if we look at the four minutes, there’s probably four minutes of wasting time irrespective of the substitutions. I’ve asked him briefly and he said that our goalkeeper was wasting just as much in the first half, that’s why he didn’t register that added time. So what, we were trying to slow the game down?! We’re trying to win the game!’

“Secondly, he was not happy with the ball boys. Multi-ball has been implemented because Howard Webb had this hope at the start of the season to get the ball in play for more minutes, so allowed multi-ball, it’s been evolved a bit as the season has gone on, but he made our ball boys nervous because he kept telling them that they couldn’t throw the ball back to the players – quite bizarre.

“It’s not the ref’s fault that we didn’t produce a moment of real quality to have won the game, but I think with the four minutes at the end when we’re really pinning them in, it should have been seven minutes at the very least.”

Matt Corlett record vs Wrexham

Corlett has taken charge of three Wrexham games during his time as a referee.

The Welsh outfit have won just one of those matches and were held to draws in the remaining two fixtures.

Corlett has brandished three yellow cards to Wrexham players in said games and is yet to send off or award a penalty against them.
