Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds should plot ambitious move for Premier League ace under one condition

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have made no secret of their plans to turn Wrexham into a Premier League club one day.

Speaking back in January 2025, Ryan Reynolds spoke of his Premier League ambition, which he got from Rob McElhenney.

Reynolds said: “I remember Rob early on, he was like ‘of course we want to go to the Premier League’, and it eventually got into my cells… —- yes we want that, why wouldn’t we want that? Who wouldn’t want that? And we can kind of see it, you know?”

Right now, Wrexham are battling at the top end of League One, looking to secure automatic promotion alongside Birmingham City.

The Red Dragons remain in a very tight battle for second place, but Wycombe Wanderer’s fixtures are tougher on paper.

Even if a top-two finish does not materialise, the Welsh outfit will have a chance to win promotion via the play-offs in May.

So, if Wrexham do make history and win promotion to the Championship, it’s clear they will need to undergo a big squad overhaul to compete in the second tier.

Wrexham need Premier League experience to survive Championship

One of the club’s weakest areas this season has been its striker department, with no player, who has been in Wales all season, scoring more than seven league goals.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin have three each, Jack Marriott has five but hasn’t scored since October in League One, Modou Faal is yet to get off the mark in the third tier and Jay Rodriguez has zero goals in 10 since his January arrival.

Sam Smith, who has netted three after arriving from Reading where he’d already scored 11 League One goals, is Wrexham’s best centre-forward right now but he alone won’t be able to provide enough goals to make the club competitive in the Championship.

In turn, as they have done previously with players like James McClean, the Red Dragons should be looking to poach players from higher divisions who have plenty of experience.

On this front, Wrexham should, as long as they do win promotion in 2024/25, looking to plot an ambitious move for Danny Ings.

Ings is now 32 years of age and fans are probably growing tired of their team signing players above 30, but if they want to do well in the Championship and avoid a relegation battle, they will need players like him.

How much would Wrexham have to pay for Danny Ings

Ings is currently plying his trade at West Ham United but, crucially, his deal at the London Stadium runs out in June.

As a result, Wrexham would be able to sign the Englishman on a free transfer.

He may no longer be a regular starter in the top flight, but 72 Premier League goals and 27 in the Championship is a very respectable record.

Ings is an agile forward who, on paper, would be an upgrade on stars like Jack Marriott.

Granted, he’s probably past his best in the Premier League, but he should still be able to perform well in the second tier.

The only potential stumbling block is Ings’ wage, which Capology put at £125,000-a-week.

But given they’d save money on transfer fees and the player will likely have to take a wage cut no matter where he ends up next season due to his age, Wrexham should still at least look at a move if they are promoted and have more money to play with.
