Wrexham’s promotion hopes took a major blow in what was a night that brought the club back down to Earth, following the highs of the Birmingham performance and new signing.
Wrexham fans and players went into the game against Stevenage full of confidence and hoping to build momentum in their League One promotion charge but were out-fought and out-played by Alex Revell’s side.
Phil Parkinson shared how Wrexham failed to defend properly once again, after slamming his side’s defensive display in the defeat to Shrewsbury.
Arthur Okonkwo would have been disappointed with his part in Stevenage’s first two goals and there was a poor performance from Dan Scarr in the Wrexham player ratings.
Following the game, one statistic has proven that Parkinson needs to shuffle his pack in order to find a spot for one key defender in his starting eleven.

Statistic proves Lewis Brunt should return to the Wrexham starting line up against Crawley
Defender Lewis Brunt signed from Leicester City in the summer and after a brief substitute appearance against Northampton Town back in October, made his full debut in a 3-0 win over Exeter in November.
That game sparked a run of eight appearances in the first team, where Wrexham went unbeaten and kept clean sheets in exactly half of those games.
| Wrexham record with Lewis Brunt starting | Games | Wins | defeats | Clean sheets |
| Lewis Brunt | 8 | 6 | 2 | 4 |
The defender picked up a calf injury following Wrexham’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Wigan on December 29th but Brunt is now back in full training and Parkinson needs to realise the importance of his player. Wrexham have won just one game in five after Brunt’s injury.
Scarr looked shaky against Stevenage and Eoghan O’Connell was poor in the defeat to Shrewsbury, meaning a spot is open for Brunt to return alongside Max Cleworth and Thomas O’Connor.
Promotion rivals Wycombe and Birmingham compound Wrexham’s misery
The Red Dragons 3-2 defeat to Stevenage was their first at the Racecourse Ground since March 2024 and dealt a hammer blow to their promotion hopes.
Wrexham’s misery was compounded after promotion rivals Wycombe and Birmingham both won to stretch their leads over Parkinson’s side.

Birmingham moved eight points clear of Wrexham at the top of League One with two games in hand following an excellent 1-0 win at Huddersfield, whilst Richard Kone scored a last minute winner for Wycombe to defeat Barnsley 2-1.
Wycombe themselves now sit six points clear of Wrexham in the final automatic promotion spot with the Red Dragons now facing the next three league fixtures away from home and in need of some character and fight.
