The £151m issue Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac need to address by 2027 to fulfil their Wrexham plan

Wrexham are competing in the Championship for the first time ever, but Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have bigger dreams in mind.

The Red Dragons last competed in the second tier of English football over forty years ago, long before it was rebranded as the Championship in the early 2000s.

Wrexham spent 15 years in the National League but thanks to the backing of Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, they have become the first team in history to win three promotions in a row when starting in the fifth tier or higher.

An opening weekend fixture against Southampton is now less than a week away, and much has been made about how the Dragons will fare this season.

Opta’s supercomputer has Wrexham fighting relegation in the next 12 months, while Reynolds and Mac plan to reach the Premier League by the end of 2026/27.

Wrexham squad value pales in comparison to top Championship teams

In a bid to achieve their goal of reaching the top flight, Wrexham’s transfer spend has increased a great deal in recent months.

Their transfer record has already been broken this summer with the addition of Liberato Cacace, while Wrexham have broken the £10m barrier now that Kieffer Moore has joined this week.

Despite all the new additions, Wrexham still have one of the lowest value squads in the second tier.

Transfermarkt’s latest valuation sees the Dragons’ entire team worth €28.70m (around £25m).

That is 21st in the division and well behind the top teams, including Ipswich Town and their upcoming opponents, Southampton.

Should Wrexham want to compete with the top teams in the second tier, which they will have to do by 2027 if they are to complete their plan to win promotion to the Premier League, it’s clear their squad value will have to increase a great deal.

There is just over a £151m gap between Southampton’s valuation and the Dragons’ right now, and while more value doesn’t guarantee success, it’s no coincidence that the majority of the teams listed above are expected to be in the promotion mix this year.

Wrexham have three transfer windows to win Premier League promotion

The bulk of Wrexham’s transfer business this summer appears to be done, though a deal for Nathan Broadhead remains on the table.

They will then have January 2026, summer 2026, and January 2027 to bring in more players to boost their promotion chances.

Wrexham have the revenue to continue spending big, but whether that spending translates to success on the pitch remains to be seen.
