How Wrexham’s average squad age compares to the entire Championship after Kieffer Moore transfer

Wrexham have completed the signing of Kieffer Moore this week, seeing their average squad age increase.

Phil Parkinson has had a clear transfer strategy since replacing Dean Keates as Wrexham manager in 2021.

The Red Dragons have won three promotions in a row under the former Sunderland boss, who has never been shy about signing ageing players.

A 38-year-old Steven Fletcher was Wrexham’s highest-scoring striker in 2024/25, but has now left.

James McClean, now 36, remains the club captain and is expected to start the opening few games of the new season.

More recently, Wrexham signed Kieffer Moore to a three-year deal. The centre-forward turns 33 later this week and will be 35 by the time his contract is up.

Wrexham’s average squad age compared to Championship

While it’s often a criticism of Parkinson and Wrexham that they sign too many players at the back end of their careers, there can be no denying it’s a plan that has worked so far.

Wrexham will now be competing in the Championship for the first time this season and, unsurprisingly, they have one of the oldest squads in the division.

But in reality, while this is often used as a stick to beat the Dragons with, looking at all 24 teams, it’s probably fair to say that the average squad age doesn’t matter too much.

Ipswich Town are widely regarded as one of the favourites to win automatic promotion, yet they have the third-oldest squad in the second tier, just below Wrexham.

Similarly, Coventry City, West Brom and Leicester City, all of whom should be in and around the play-off picture this year, crack the top 10.

Wrexham squad age could come down

While the average age of a team doesn’t seem to mean an awful lot, for those who do put stock in the statistic, Wrexham’s squad age could come down before the deadline on September 1.

33-year-old Ollie Palmer has been offered to multiple teams this summer, with MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon having looked at the striker.

Jacob Mendy, although only slightly above the average at 28, is expected to leave this summer.

George Evans, 30, has fallen further down the midfield pecking order this summer, so an exit in the next month would make sense as Parkinson aims to trim what is currently the biggest squad in the second tier.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Lewis Koumas could join Wrexham on loan from Premier League side Liverpool.
