The worrying Wrexham statistic Phil Parkinson must fix in 2025 – it could dent their promotion chances

Wrexham were once again held to an unconvincing draw against Bristol Rovers in League One.

With Rovers managerless heading into the game, many would have expected the Red Dragons to comfortably overcome the 19th-placed side – that however wouldn’t turn out to be the case.

Elliot Lee got his side in front thanks to a remarkable assist from Matty James – but Wrexham would be pegged back Promise Omochere’s late equaliser.

Having dominated for the majority of the game, Mark Griffiths highlighted Wrexham’s inability to kill the game off – a trend that is coming back to bite Phil Parkinson’s side.

Wrexham’s worrying trend of conceding late goals

Bristol Rovers’ 86th-minute equaliser is the latest in a long line of late conceded goals for Wrexham.

For example, on the last six occasions, the Red Dragons have dropped points they have conceded a goal past the 80-minute mark, four times.

Back-to-back draws against bottom-half teams will do Ryan Reynolds’ promotion hopes no good, especially with the likes of Huddersfield and Stockport picking up convincing wins.

Currently sat third in League One, Wrexham’s bad habit of conceding late is starting to cost them vital points – something that could eventually harm them come May.

Phil Parkinson urges Wrexham to be more ‘clinical’

With the Christmas period in full swing and games coming thick and fast, Wrexham boss Parkinson will hope this trend quickly fades away.

Speaking to the Wrexham YouTube channel after the Rovers draw, Parkinson honed in on his side’s current inability to kill games off.

“It’s bitterly disappointing we haven’t got all three points today. The game should have been out of sight if we’re honest, even in the first-half we played so well and got a brilliant goal.

“Then we had other opportunities to go and extend the lead and we didn’t take them. Second half we had even more moments to put the game out of sight and when those moments don’t go your way, you are always vulnerable to one costly moment.

“It was a game where we were rarely ever threatened barring a few set plays wich I thought we handled really well. Of course, it hurts to concede so late in the game especially after the endavor, effort, and physicality from the lads’ performance was very good but we needed to be more clinical when the comments come and put the game to bed. We should be talking about a 2-0, 3-0 victory.”
