Wrexham continue to push for promotion to the Championship after beating Exeter City 2-0 away from home on Saturday afternoon.
Wrexham now have just seven League One games to play, and the ultimate goal for Phil Parkinson is moving closer.
Parkinson watched on as Wrexham beat Exeter City 2-0 over the weekend, with Ollie Rathbone and Jay Rodriguez on the scoresheet.
The result keeps Wrexham three points ahead of third-placed Wycombe Wanderers, who beat Lincoln City on Saturday.
Wycombe still have a game in hand on Wrexham, but Parkinson will be delighted with points on the board right now.
There is no rest for Wrexham, though, as Parkinson prepares his side to take on Cambridge United on Tuesday night.
Proven Wrexham duo can step up in promotion race
Parkinson has a fairly settled starting XI right now, with Wrexham not only picking up victories but also clean sheets.
That settled lineup means that big players are being left out, with Ollie Palmer again missing out on Saturday.
Humphrey Ker thinks Paul Mullin can have a Wrexham future, but he also missed out against Exeter City.
Two proven performers find themselves on the bench right now and have been quiet in recent weeks; Elliot Lee and Jack Marriott.
There are extenuating circumstances here as Lee was involved in a road traffic accident in February and has been worked back into action slowly.
Marriott suffered a significant injury back in October and only made his return to action in early 2025.
Lee hasn’t scored or assisted since the EFL Trophy win over Port Vale on February 4, whilst Marriott’s last goal contribution came against Northampton Town way back in October.
The pair are proven players for Wrexham, with Lee a major attacking force from midfield and Marriott impressing as a goalscorer in the opening weeks of the season.
The last few weeks have been quiet for both players, but Parkinson knows that he can count on both of them when called upon.
Lee and Marriott need to take chances from the bench when they come, but nobody would be surprised if one – or both – come up with goals to see Wrexham over the line before the season ends.
Wrexham substitutes can have a big impact
Lee and Marriott are quality players in the final third, but Wrexham do have other players who can shine off the bench in the race for promotion.
Steven Fletcher is the main man, with the Scot carving out a role as a brilliant super-sub this season.
Parkinson feels that Fletcher is ‘almost unplayable’ when coming off the bench, and the veteran forward has proven that over the course of the campaign.
Ryan Barnett was Wrexham’s hero earlier in the season, but now finds himself stuck behind January signing Ryan Longman in the pecking order.
Barnett can certainly provide Wrexham with quality into the box and could be the man to unlock stubborn defences.
Sebastian Revan’s pace and drive up the left flank could prove vital too, with Parkinson no doubt ready and willing to utilise his squad options before the season ends.
