What Max Cleworth did vs Barnsley highlights worrying Wrexham trend that could cost them promotion

Max Cleworth has been in top form for Wrexham during the 2024/25 season.

Max Cleworth made 24 League Two appearances for the Red Dragons last term but never truly cemented himself as a regular starter.

However, the current campaign has seen the central defender really step up and develop into a top star.

Ben Tozer made an exciting Cleworth prediction earlier this week, and it’s easy to see why given his form this season.

The 22-year-old has already started 20 league matches this season and was in from the off when Wrexham lost to Barnsley on Wednesday.

The Red Dragons went 2-0 down after 26 minutes against their play-off rivals but pushed very hard to get back into the game.

Cleworth scored in the second half but it wasn’t enough and his goal has now highlighted a worrying Wrexham trend.

Max Cleworth should not be Wrexham’s joint-top scorer

Cleworth has improved at Wrexham a great deal this year, especially at the top end of the pitch.

Despite being a central defender, the Englishman now has five goals and one assist in League One as well as one goal in the EFL Trophy in 2024/25.

While having defenders and midfielders chip in with goals is important, it’s becoming a rather worrying trend at Wrexham instead of a bonus.

Cleworth’s six strikes mean he is now their joint-top scorer in all competitions this season alongside midfielder, Elliot Lee.

The Barnsley loss was not the first time Parkinson has had to look past his strikers for goals either, with the likes of Ollie Rathbone and Ryan Barnett having to step up in that regard with his centre-forwards simply not delivering.

Promotion rivals Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers are getting plenty of goals from their attackers and if Wrexham keep having to rely on the likes of Cleworth to produce, it’s obvious they will fall short in the promotion race.

Every striker linked with Wrexham

On the bright side, attacking reinforcements are expected to arrive at the Racecourse Ground in January.

Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie is wanted by Wrexham but his lack of goals so far this season is a concern.

Leeds United duo Joe Gelhardt and Patrick Bamford have been linked to the Welsh outfit as well.

We also understand that Wrexham want to sign Ethan Wheatley from Premier League outfit Manchester United but face competition from Stockport County on that front.

Elsewhere, it’s obvious the club want to sign a player who has performed at a higher level than League One previously as the Red Dragons are interested in Harry Cornick of Bristol City.
