What Phil Parkinson said about Arthur Okonkwo ahead of Wrexham’s game vs Leicester is so frustrating

Arthur Okonkwo is proving to be a quite frustrating player for Wrexham, especially after the game against Leicester City.

On Tuesday night, Wrexham drew 1-1 with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, picking up a very impressive point after what was a strong performance.

Several players stood out for praise with Wrexham fans impressed with Lewis O’Brien’s battling performance, despite the midfielder missing a great chance to score the first goal of the game.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo should arguably have kept out Jordan James’ opening goal of the game, with the Welshman’s effort trickling past a wrong-footed Okonkwo.

It comes just after Okonkwo had a very good game against Derby County last weekend, making a string of saves to help Wrexham to a point in that game too.

One step forward, one step back for Arthur Okonkwo at Wrexham

Speaking ahead of the Leicester City game, Phil Parkinson praised Okonkwo’s Derby County performance, insisting that the former Arsenal man is growing into the Championship after replacing the injured Danny Ward in the starting XI.

Parkinson said after the Derby game: “He didn’t get the number one jersey at the start, because Wardy I felt was more ready, but Arthur’s now improving game-by-game. That was certainly his best display, and I’m pleased for him.”

After his performance against Leicester, mainly the goal conceded, it now seems like Okonkwo has the ability to perform in the Championship but not yet the consistency, especially when going up against the league’s big-hitters like Leicester City.

Danny Ward’s stats vs Arthur Okonkwo for Wrexham in 25/26

Both Ward and Okonkwo have started four games in the Championship this season, and both have conceded seven goals each.

The two goalkeepers seem very evenly-matched in most statistics this season but Ward has made more saves, albeit having conceded more goals-per-game because of the substitute appearance Okonkwo made when replacing Ward after his horror injury against Millwall.

At 24 years old, Okonkwo remains a very young goalkeeper. He’s shown his potential in the past but there remain flaws in his game. Playing in the Championship in Ward’s absence though will hopefully fast-track him and his development in the coming months.

Wrexham return to action against Birmingham City on Friday night.
