Why Phil Parkinson cannot afford to lose key Wrexham player who brought up significant milestone in Leyton Orient defeat

Wrexham suffered a double blow in the latest round of League One fixtures as their home defeat was compounded by Wycombe’s victory.

Wycombe now sit five points clear of Phil Parkinson’s side in the final automatic promotion spot in League One and Wrexham have lost consecutive home games under Parkinson for the first time.

Fans were not impressed with Parkinson’s style of play in the defeat to Orient and the pressure is beginning to build on the manager as Championship football drifts further and further away.

Ollie Rathbone starred for Wrexham and there was a huge milestone for another Red Dragon on the night, although he was not able to celebrate with three points.

Max Cleworth brings up 100th Wrexham appearance in defeat to Leyton Orient

Max Cleworth brought up his 100th appearance in a Wrexham shirt during the 2-1 defeat to Orient and has shown how important he has become to the club with his form once again this season.

Cleworth was the club’s young player of the year last season and has already scored six goals in 32 appearances for Parkinson this season.

He has been an integral part of the Red Dragons back three approach and Cleworth explained his recent good form in front of goal is down to more responsibility being given to the 22-year-old.

Should Wrexham fail to achieve promotion, there could be a number of Championship clubs circling for Cleworth given his impressive performances both defensively and in possession.

Wrexham will have to sell players this summer, Cleworth cannot be one of them

The Wrexham owners have lost a staggering amount of money since their takeover in 2021 and whilst Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney show no signs of letting up with their investment, there will come a time where the club need to balance the books.

It is expected that the likes of Ollie Palmer and fan favourite Paul Mullin will depart the Racecourse Ground in the summer but Cleworth is a player that Wrexham must keep if they are to continue building.

Cleworth is the sort of player that could easily make the transition up to Championship level and being at such a young age he still has lots of room for improvement in his game.

Wrexham will be hoping that his 100th appearance milestone isn’t the last significant number he clocks up and that his services are at their disposal for many more years to come.
