Wrexham are now set to face off with Peterborough United in the semi-final of the EFL Trophy.

Promotion out of League One remains the priority for the Red Dragons at this stage of the season.

And after Wrexham beat Mansfield Town on Sunday, they have climbed back to within just two points of the top two.

However, their attention must now turn away from the league for the time being and toward Peterborough United.

Wrexham face Peterborough United on Wednesday evening and the winner will meet Birmingham City in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley in April.

It is the latest in what has been a very hectic schedule for Phil Parkinson and co. who are now playing two games every single week for the foreseeable.

This has and will continue to force the Wrexham boss to utilise his entire squad and a recent blow means one fringe star should be featuring more going forward.

Wrexham can replace Andy Cannon with George Evans

Andy Cannon was injured during the Welsh outfit’s aforementioned 2-1 win over the weekend and is likely to be out for some time with his knee problem.

This has left Parkinson slightly short in midfield, especially given the busy run of fixtures Wrexham are currently on.

But it could be a great chance for former favourite George Evans to be handed more of a prominent role in the team.

Evans was a key figure in 2023/24 but has so far notched just 105 minutes of League One football in 2024/25.

The 30-year-old’s season was derailed by injury but he has returned to form in the EFL Trophy.

Evans impressed when Wrexham beat Bolton Wanderers in the quarter-finals and it seems likely he will start on Wednesday.

But Parkinson should now be looking to hand the Englishman a bigger role in the League One squad now cover for Cannon is needed.

He’s obviously a talented player and has certainly shown enough to warrant a promotion back into the first-team fold.

More fringe Wrexham stars could feature

We have already seen Jacob Mendy given a chance in the league recently when he filled in for the injured James McClean on Sunday.

Meanwhile, when discussing the likes of Evans after Bolton, Parkinson hinted more fringe players could see action in the final months of the campaign, as per Leader Live.

He said: “We sat long and hard thinking about the team against Bolton and felt players like Dan Scarr, George Evans, Sebastian Revan, Mo Faal, Jack Marriott and Ryan Longman haven’t played a lot of football and all needed to play in preparation for the last part of the season.

“It was absolutely crucial that they played because when we go into these crunch games which we’ve got coming up, everybody’s got to be ready.

“We’ll be utilising the group all the way through to the end of the season and I feel we’ve got a squad which is really ready for this run.”
