Wrexham could sign ‘unbelievable’ John McAtee alternative in Welsh 25-goal machine

Wrexham look well-equipped to tackle League One after making five new signings but there is one position that could cause them problems.

It’s just over two weeks till Wrexham take to the pitch once more in a competitive fixture as they host Wycombe Wanderers at home on August 10th.

Right now, Phil Parkinson’s men are soaking up the sun in California and testing themselves against Premier League opponents, as pre-season training ramps up.

The Reds have already secured an impressive draw against Bournemouth and in the early hours of Thursday morning, will face off against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.

As thousands of fans descend on Levi’s Stadium in California, they’ll be hoping to see their new signings in action, including Lewis Brunt, George Dobson and Sebastian Revan.

There is one issue, though, that Parkinson must fix ahead of their return to the third tier.

Wrexham need a proven goalscorer in League One

Parkinson has been placed in a difficult position. He has seven strikers currently at the club, most of which he’d ideally like to sell.

That includes loaning out Jake Bickerstaff and offloading Billy Waters, who failed on loan at Doncaster Rovers last term.

Likewise, he also needs long-term replacements for the veteran duo of Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer, both out of contract in 2025.

That leaves just Sam Dalby, Jack Marriott and Paul Mullin. While Marriott has scored bucketloads of goals in League One previously, Dalby has never played at the level and Mullin’s record isn’t promising, scoring three in 20 appearances.

Of course, the Liverpudlian has since notched 105 goals in just three campaigns at the Racecourse Ground and is poised to smash further records in the third tier however, the 29-year-old does need support and that could come in the shape of a League Two goal machine.

Wrexham should raid Newport County for Will Evans

Wrexham have attempted to sign John McAtee – who scored 15 goals at Barnsley last term – on loan from Luton Town.

But with Championship sides interested, Parkinson may be forced to look elsewhere and he shouldn’t have to look too far, as Newport County striker Will Evans is on the radar of multiple League One clubs.

As revealed by County chairman Huw Jenkins, via the South Wales Argus, Evans has been the subject of multiple offers but they’ve all been knocked back.

The 27-year-old was a goal machine in the fourth tier last term, plundering 25 goals in 55 appearances, with only five players bettering his tally of 21 in the league.

Standing at 6 foot 1, the Welshman possesses the height and physicality to be a capable partner for Mullin, who thrives when an unselfish striker is playing next to him.

Further, Evans could be attracted by the prospect of moving to the Reds, as not only is it close to home, but it’s also a step up the divisions, and one that his “unbelievable” goal-scoring deserves.
