Wrexham have signed a player who can take them to the Premier League by owners’ deadline

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s plan to take Wrexham to the Premier League has been made clear.

The long-term goal of the North American duo has always been to take the Red Dragons out of the National League all the way up to the top tier of English football.

A hefty challenge and something Ryan Reynolds was mocked about when he first became co-owner.

That goal is not looking so silly four years on, however, with Wrexham just one promotion away from the top-flight.

Reynolds and Rob Mac want Premier League promotion by the end of the 2026/27 season, and one player will be key to making that happen.

Josh Windass can win Premier League promotion at Wrexham

Wrexham spent a lot of money in the 2025 summer transfer window, but the free-agent pick-up of Josh Windass is proving inspired.

The 31-year-old has missed three Championship matches due to injury, but in the five games he has played, the Dragons have been much-improved.

Windass’ creativity and passing ability are second to none in this team, while his link-up play with the likes of Issa Kabore and Ryan Longman has been so important.

Not only is the former Sheffield Wednesday man largely responsible for starting a lot of Wrexham’s attacks, but he’s also contributing on the goal front.

In just 318 minutes of league football this term, he already has three goals to his name for the Dragons – as many as strikers Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer managed in a full League One campaign.

Away from his goal threat and creativity, Windass possesses leadership skills that have been sorely needed now that club captain James McClean and vice captain Matty James are no longer regular starters.

The Englishman has taken the armband in Wrexham’s last three league matches and, by his own admission, is loving his new role.

A huge squad overhaul with several previously big characters meant someone needed to step up and lead this group on the pitch, and it’s fair to say Windass is thriving in that position.

Josh Windass’ Wrexham transfer praised

While promotion isn’t the goal this season, Windass should still be a key figure next term when the club are expected to be pushing for a place in the top-flight.

He’s been a top-level Championship talent for some years, and the fact that Wrexham managed to sign him for nothing is great business.

Windass’ transfer has been praised previously, with it suggested by Nathan Salt that the ex-Owl is probably a £10m player.

He said: “Josh Windass, though, to get him on a free, that will be easily one of the best signings anyone makes in the Championship all season.

“You get a player that is probably worth 10 million quid on a free, a goal-scoring midfielder the de facto 10. He is in a position that he wants to be, he wants to be off the forward and not having to be the one who’s back to goal and everything bouncing off him.”
