Wrexham must act now to snap up striker who is about to become a free agent – he’s better than Bodvarsson

2024 is drawing to a close and Wrexham are expected to make changes to their squad in January.

Wrexham gave Matty James a new contract this month after his stellar, albeit brief stint at the Racecourse Ground this season.

James arrived as a free agent in October alongside former Bolton Wanderers centre-forward, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

The latter was signed after Jack Marriott suffered a long-term injury blow that still has the number nine sidelined.

Phil Parkinson dubbed Bodvarrson ‘really good’ following his first league start against Stockport County in November.

However, the 32-year-old has only played 11 more minutes of league football since that start and hasn’t even made the matchday squad in Wrexham’s last seven League One fixtures.

While yet to be confirmed, Bodvarsson’s short-term contract expires on December 31st, meaning he will once again be a free agent on January 1st.

Wrexham could replace Jon Dadi Bodvarsson with Andre Gray

With Bodvarsson leaving, the Welsh side will have room in their squad for another striker.

Wrexham want a Championship quality forward and could now explore the free-agent market once more to fill that void.

Andre Gray arrived at Plymouth Argyle in October as a free agent and has since shone for a very poor Greens side.

He has three goals in the second tier this campaign despite completing 90 minutes just once and playing in a woeful team.

Gray would also bring a wealth of Premier League and Championship experience – something Wrexham are actively looking for in a striker.

What Wayne Rooney said about Andre Gray before Plymouth sacking

Crucially, the 33-year-old’s deal with Plymouth is due to expire on January 3rd, 2025, when he can once again be snapped up for nothing.

He’d be the perfect, short-term addition for the Red Dragons until the end of the season when they can then look to bring in a long-term centre-forward option.

Plymouth recently sacked manager Wayne Rooney but he did comment on Gray’s future this month before leaving, as per Plymouth Live.

He said: “I think Andre has done really well. I will have a meeting with the board to see where we are at. I think that’s really important to see exactly what we can do in January.

“We have already had early meetings but I want to finalise it, and then that obviously influences the decision with Andre, and Marko, and players coming in. At the minute I can’t guarantee anything on any players, but once I get the confirmation of exactly what we can do I will know where we stand on them two, and potential players coming in.”
