Wrexham suffer another transfer blow as 27-cap midfielder makes future decision, their strategy isn’t working

One Wrexham target has made up his mind regarding his future, it’s not good news for the Dragons.

Wrexham have been linked with several big names ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season as they look to recruit heavily before the campaign starts.

Several strikers have been on Wrexham’s radar, including Danny Ings most recently, but the Dragons’ top priority remains bringing in an experienced midfielder.

An older head with previous experience in the Premier League and/or Championship appears to be at the top of Phil Parkinson’s wishlist this summer, which is why Barry Bannan fits the bill as a target for Wrexham.

Amid links to Wrexham, Bannan has made a crucial decision regarding his future at Sheffield Wednesday, and unfortunately for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, history has repeated itself.

Wrexham look set to miss out on Bannan this summer as, per a report by The Star, they revealed that the Scotsman is set on staying at Sheffield Wednesday despite the ongoing financial difficulties at the club.

Bannan has made it clear that he is keen to retire at Sheffield Wednesday, the club he has represented for 10 years.

It seems as though it is a repeat of the situation surrounding a former transfer target for Reynolds and McElhenney. Tom Cairney decided to stay at Fulham despite interest from Wrexham, just as it is the case with Bannan now, meaning that the Dragons have missed out on another top target. The same also happened with Ben Davies, who also decided to stay at Spurs by signing a contract extension.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must divert interest away from the transfer strategy that is proving unsuccessful

As the club gears up for the 2025/26 Championship season, there will need to be plenty of urgency in bringing as many targets through the doors of the Racecourse Ground as early as possible.

However, the current task of finding players appears to have been quite difficult so far, with the trend of both Bannan and Cairney wanting to stay at their respective clubs. As important as it is to bring experience into the side, Wrexham need to slightly divert away from such a player.

Wrexham are linked with Joe Gelhardt, for example, a player who has a decent level of experience, but also doesn’t have strong ties with his current side, Leeds United, which would make it more likely for him to join.

Expectations shouldn’t be dropped by Wrexham in terms of the type of player they wish to bring in, but those without allegiances to their current sides will likely be easier to bring through the doors.
