How Wrexham fans first reacted to Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac takeover interest in 2020

Wrexham supporters were met with the news of ‘a bid to purchase the club’ five years ago, and from that point onwards, they knew everything would change for the better.

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac first acquired the club in 2021, following in-depth discussions with the Trust, who previously held ownership.

After they took control, they invested significant time and money into helping the club skyrocket up the divisions after over a decade in the National League.

Wrexham supporters had previously had to save their club from liquidation in their darkest hour, and had since been scarred by awful mismanagement, but as soon as news of the Hollywood takeover came about, they knew that they would be in for a brilliant ride.

How Wrexham supporters first reacted to takeover news

In September 2020, Wrexham put out a statement calling for a meeting following interest in purchasing the club.

As word quickly spread about the high-profile nature of the takeover, die-hard Wrexham fans showed their enthusiasm in the comments.

Via X, one fan in 2020 said: “I’m an ardent supporter of the trust. I know there have been some baffling decisions along the way, but the club was saved by the trust. However, I now think this is the right time to step aside and let the right people move us forward with the appropriate finance.”

Another supporter said: “We need to progress! We really do, we have been stuck down here for 13 years, I want my kids to watch Wrexham in the football league, I want this town to have a club we can be proud of again, make us a force again.”

Fans continued to show their support for the mystery future owners who were keen to purchase the club, as another said: “This is what’s needed. Fan ownership has taken us as far as we can go. Time for big investment.”

One supporter had a crumb of inside information on the potential takeover, having written: “Got told 2 days ago a Hollywood actor was wanting to takeover Wrexham, obviously thought nothing of it. Heard some mad names thrown about today too. Surely not?”

Of course, five years on, we know that it is the best thing that has happened to the club in its recent history.

Wrexham fans deserve the good times after previous struggles

While onlookers often show a whiff of jealousy towards the situation at Wrexham, with the club rising meteorically through the EFL to the Championship, where they now compete, it can be argued that not many supporters deserve this more than the Red Dragons’ faithful.

Wrexham supporters have been starved of success, and even been on the brink of collapse, but Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s takeover brought a significant change to that.

The ultimate goal for Rob and Ryan is to reach the Premier League, and while it has been a challenging start to the 2025/26 Championship season, with Wrexham sat 21st in the table, their chances of the final goal have never been greater.
