Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson oversaw a troublesome defeat to QPR, which has been described as ‘really poor’.

Wrexham’s start to the 2025/26 Championship season has seen Phil Parkinson face difficulties, with the Red Dragons sat 21st in the table.

Last time out saw Wrexham lose 3-1 to QPR, and since then, questions have been asked of the Red Dragons boss.

Discussions have been held amongst the Wrexham hierarchy over Parkinson’s position, with it clear that the Red Dragons have struggled at Championship level so far.

The QPR defeat was an embodiment of the challenging start that Wrexham have faced so far, with one aspect of the game being described as ‘really poor’ by one EFL expert.

Wrexham slammed for ‘mistakes’ after their ‘schooling’ against QPR

Wrexham were comfortably beaten by QPR at the Racecourse Ground, with defensive concerns notably being the Red Dragons’ Achilles heel.

In particular, Conor Coady has come under scrutiny by the Wrexham supporters, having struggled against the pace of the QPR attack.

However, one EFL expert has dug deeper into the problem at Wrexham, suggesting that it stretches far beyond the shortcomings in defence.

Speaking on the Second Tier Podcast, EFL expert Justin Peach took aim at the defensive incapabilities, but also the mistakes made in the centre of the park.

“You can’t really paper over it,” said Peach. “It’s been really poor. The amount of mistakes in possession, leaving gaps out of possession, it was a schooling in this game in particular.

“I just don’t understand why Wrexham allowed that to keep happening, and I don’t really know what it tells me, actually, because Wrexham statistically are the worst defensive team in the division. They’ve conceded the most chances and the highest xG against as well. So is your game plan really set up in the right way?

“I’m not seeing enough at the back to convince me that they can stay up.”

Conor Coady must rally the troops following poor display against QPR

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson brought in several experienced players this summer, spending significant fees in the process.

Following their flurry of transfer activity, it was expected that the Red Dragons would find themselves in the higher echelons of the Championship table, but it has not worked out that way so far.

With the experience that Wrexham have within the ranks, including Conor Coady, those sorts of players should be helping the club emerge from their challenging situation.

Pressure is mounting on Parkinson, and now it is up to those players whom he brought in to finally start delivering.
