Wrexham legend Paul Mullin has had a glittering career with the Red Dragons, but he also shone before he arrived at the Racecourse Ground, where he bizarrely shone in a completely different position.

This summer saw Paul Mullin depart Wrexham on loan, joining Wigan Athletic in a loan deal for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Whilst we will not see Mullin donning the famous red Wrexham shirt this season, all eyes continue to witness the Red Dragons’ hero during his loan spell in League One and whether he can get back up to speed for Phil Parkinson’s side.

Since Mullin joined Wrexham, he spearheaded the team, both on and off the pitch, making him a firm fan favourite at the club.

The supporters got to see the family side of Mullin in WrexhamFX; however, he was initially brought in to score goals during the National League days. There were assurances over his ability in front of goal, but he had not always provided this at striker, as he had also played in an area that Parkinson never utilised him in.

Paul Mullin used to play right wing for Swindon Town before Wrexham move

At the age of 22, Paul Mullin was beginning to find his feet as a goalscorer early in his career, where, for Swindon Town in League Two, he bagged two goals in 10 appearances.

Surprisingly, however, he was not utilised in his familiar striker position, but was actually shipped out to the right to make room for Cole Stockton, now at Salford City.

In fact, Mullin spoke about this change in his style of play at the time, as he said, back in 2017 when speaking to the Swindon Advertiser: “I’ve come to the club and I’m a centre forward – that’s me.

“But I don’t mind playing anywhere as long as it’s helping the team.

“As you have seen in the games where I have played out wide, I have been able to do a job for the team and do well.

“That’s all I want to do. (I want to) win every game and if the gaffer feels we’ll win the game with me playing out wide, then great and if it’s up front, then great as well, it doesn’t matter to me.

“I suppose it’s an advantage to me and the team if I can play in numerous positions on the pitch.

“If something goes wrong or something needs changing then you can always do that.’’

Paul Mullin will have a point to prove during his Wigan Athletic spell

Many Wrexham supporters were gutted, as was Paul Mullin, when the Liverpudlian was confirmed to not be part of Phil Parkinson’s plans this season.

Mullin has spoken about his ambitions of playing in the Championship previously, and whilst that has been put on ice for the time being, he will hope that he can get that opportunity once again.

The Wrexham legend has shown so much love for the club, and that will certainly translate into a desire to show his worth at League One level this season with Wigan Athletic.

If Mullin can notch a successful season in League One, we could potentially see him once again play for Wrexham, this time in the Championship.
