In the early stages of Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s time at the club, they and Phil Parkinson came under a wave of scrutiny.

Wrexham have risen from the ashes during the Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac era, emerging from the National League to climb to the Championship.

Since Rob and Ryan took over at the club, Red Dragons fans have been treated to three successive promotions and a recent summer transfer window that has seen the Wrexham owners splash the cash on proven Championship talents.

The last three seasons have gone swimmingly for Wrexham, but that contrasts to the difficulties that they faced in Rob and Ryan’s debut season, which saw the Red Dragons narrowly miss out on promotion via the play-offs.

During that campaign, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson notably came under scrutiny by a section of the fanbase, with such claims being incredible in hindsight.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac reacted to Wrexham fan claims in the 2021/22 season

During the filming of Welcome To Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac reacted to some fan comments, which were specifically directed towards Phil Parkinson.

It proved to be a challenging start to the 2021/22 National League campaign in Phil Parkinson’s debut season, having won just four games in the opening 12 league fixtures.

Because of the lofty expectations that sparked from Rob and Ryan’s arrival, the Wrexham boss came under scrutiny.

Both Rob and Ryan reacted to some of the fan comments made, which in hindsight, are spectacular when given the success in previous years for Wrexham.

One fan said: “After nearly 19 games, there appears to be very little improvement in the team’s performance. If we can’t change the players, we must change the manager.”

Another supporter targeted the Wrexham boss, having said: “Shocking stuff. I want Parkinson out.”

One fan then wrote: “S__ formation. Haven’t got the players for it.”

The criticism continued, as one supporter said: “Too slow appointing a manager who inherited a strange retained list.”

While Parkinson was under pressure at times in his first season, it is safe to say he turned things around pretty quickly from his second season onwards.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac will be glad they stuck with Phil Parkinson

When there is so much expectation on a team such as Wrexham to perform, owners can often be forced into making a tough decision.

There may have been brief discussions following the first season on whether Phil Parkinson was the right man to take Wrexham forward, and after the success in recent years, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac will be glad they stuck with him.

Parkinson’s experience has been crucial in getting Wrexham up to speed in the EFL, as without him, the outcome could have been very different.

Patience is often key in football, as we have seen many clubs rush into unwanted decisions. Thankfully, Rob and Ryan, with the help of the Wrexham board, decided to back Parkinson instead.
