Wrexham promotion hero admits deadline day ‘madness’ after Phil Parkinson decided to let him go

Wrexham allowed Jacob Mendy to leave the club on transfer deadline day as he joined Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United.

Wrexham faced a major step up from League One to the Championship, and that meant difficult decisions had to be made.

From Paul Mullin’s move to Wigan Athletic to Ollie Palmer’s recent departure to Swindon Town, Wrexham fans have been forced to say some emotional goodbyes.

A number of those farewells came on deadline day, as Jacob Mendy and Thomas O’Connor joined Peterborough United.

Both Mendy and O’Connor were part of the Wrexham journey in the National League and promotion heroes from that point, but they have now departed on loan for the season.

Jacob Mendy on Wrexham exit ‘madness’

O’Connor’s move had been rumoured on deadline day, but Mendy’s switch was a little more unexpected.

Parkinson had made Mendy available, but an appearance against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup left some wondering if he could stay put.

Mendy has now joined Peterborough on loan for the season and made his debut against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Darren Ferguson felt Mendy tired in the second half, and the Gambian will hope for more first-team football after a frustrating time with Wrexham.

Mendy has now opened up on his move, telling Posh+ that trying to finalise the deal was ‘madness’ on deadline day.

Peterborough’s interest only emerged six hours before Mendy signed on the dotted line, so the left wing-back went through a real mad dash to get the deal done.

Mendy admitted that his time at Wrexham has been ‘amazing’, but he is now looking to bring his success at the STōK Cae Ras to Peterborough.

“It was an amazing time at Wrexham, something I’ll be able to tell my kids and grandkids about,” said Mendy, as quoted by the Peterborough Telegraph.

“I had some great experiences with Wrexham, and hopefully I can bring those experiences here to help the team.

“I knew about the possibility of the move about six hours before I came, so there was a bit of madness trying to sort things out, but I’m happy it’s happened,” he added.

Jacob Mendy on Thomas O’Connor

The real quirk from Mendy’s move is that he followed O’Connor to Peterborough.

Both Wrexham defenders have joined the Posh on loan for the season, as they look to move off the bottom of the League One table.

Mendy noted that he and O’Connor used to car share at Wrexham, so they may well do the same at Peterborough.

“I knew some of the lads before I got down here, and I’ve settled in quite well now. Obviously, I know Tom very well. We used to car share at Wrexham,” he added.

These deals may only be loans, but Wrexham’s constant improvement means O’Connor and Mendy may struggle to break back in, and their Wrexham careers may already be over after agreeing their loan moves.
