Ryan Reynolds was desperate to fix a Wrexham problem that has now been solved.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been the owners of Wrexham for four and a half years now.

During that time, the Dragons have improved a great deal on and off the pitch.

But one issue the club has been trying to fix for several years was dragged out for some time before finally getting the green light in the last month.

Ryan Reynolds on fixing Wrexham stadium

The Racecourse Ground, as expected after over a decade in the National League, needed to be renovated once Rob and Ryan took over.

The Kop stand was in particularly bad shape, and plans to build a new stand have been in place for some time.

During Season 2 of Welcome to Wrexham, which aired in 2023, we saw Reynolds discussing Wrexham’s stadium plans alongside Mac and Shaun Harvey.

The co-owners found out it would cost $24.8m (around £20m) to renovate the Racecourse, which led to an amusing joke from Ryan.

Reynolds said: “It’s a huge problem,” before asking Harvey if there’s anything they can do “to help see this through”.

Harvey replied: “We’ll find a solution because we are going to need to think outside the box and do things differently.”

Reynolds then joked: “I’ll sell one of my children. I have four. I don’t even know their names.”

Mac added: “I don’t have £20m lying around. I don’t know if Ryan does, but I don’t think so. He might say he does, but I would talk to Blake [Lively] because I bet you he doesn’t.”

Wrexham Council green lights stadium funding

It took some time, but Wrexham have secured funding to improve the Racecourse this year.

A filing was made on Companies House in late September, with £25m in public funding made available to the club for their stadium improvements.

Finance expert Adam Williams explained to The Wrexham Insider: “The council is keen to back the football club given the benefits it is providing for the local economy. Specifically, as Liam Randall details, this new document is effectively confirming that Wrexham have got access to £25m in public funding to help redevelop the stadium.

“More accurately, it’s probably ringfenced to help redevelop the infrastructure around the stadium. That tends to be how public money is allocated.

“The charge itself is sort of like a mortgage, with the stadium itself being used as security. Basically, it is taking the Racecourse Ground as collateral to ensure that the conditions of the grant are met.”
