Wrexham are finding themselves increasingly coming under the spotlight following their incredible rise through the football pyramid.

When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the club in 2021, few could have imagined their rise to the Championship would have occurred so quickly.

As Phil Parkinson’s side continue to progress and continue to flex their financial muscles, rival fans are becoming more vocal about their dislike for the Red Dragons.

Wrexham’s owners have a 2027 target for the Premier League and Reynolds once had a strong message for any envious on-lookers.

Ryan Reynolds once revealed it was ‘perfectly acceptable’ to root against him and Rob McElhenney

Speaking on season two episode three of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, Reynolds revealed that he had no problem with rival fans rooting against the owners.

Wrexham’s owners promised to be ‘aggressive’ in the summer transfer market and delivered that promise with almost £40m spent.

It has led to rival fans and some pundits questioning the amount of money spent by the club, however, Reynolds has always been clear where the criticism should be aimed when it comes to Wrexham.

Reynolds stated: “I think it’s perfectly acceptable to root against Rob [McElhenney] and I but I don’t see how you can root against a town that has been through so much. I don’t know how you don’t root for a town like Wrexham.”

Shaun Harvey once revealed Wrexham’s owners were ‘the biggest problem’ at the club as they inflated transfer fees given their high-profile status.

What cannot be argued is the positive impact the duo have had on not just the football club, but the whole town of Wrexham since they took charge.

Rob McElhenney takes different view to Ryan Reynolds surrounding rival fans

Speaking on the same episode, McElhenney had a slightly different view to criticism and jibes from Wrexham’s rival fans during a tough spell in the National League.

McElhenney stated: “Sport is so tribal in nature that you’re going to have supporters of other clubs looking at this club and wanting to cut us down at every turn simply in support of their own club.

“They’re not necessarily inclined to look at the situation objectively, that’s the fun of sport. Then, of course there are also cynics out there who just hear the story and they’re just sort of cynical without really looking into it. And they can f— all the way off.”

The owners will be hoping that criticism does not come their way during their next Championship clash as they welcome QPR to the Racecourse Ground following the international break.
