Wrexham are desperate to open their Championship account as they prepare to welcome Sheffield Wednesday.

Phil Parkinson’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats to kick off their campaign in the second tier and will be hoping for a change of fortune when they face a struggling Wednesday side.

Wrexham have full confidence in Parkinson amid the team’s bad start to the season and are still bedding in new players and moulding a 25-man squad good enough to compete.

It is not the first time there have been question marks surrounding the Wrexham boss and advice from Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to Rob McElhenney proved pivotal in the past.

Jeffrey Lurie advice to Rob McElhenney saved Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham job in 2021

Speaking on season one episode eleven of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, advice from Lurie was given to McElhenney that is believed to have saved Parkinson his Wrexham job back in 2021.

Wrexham had stuttered in their pursuit of the National League and a poor run of results had left fans calling for a managerial change.

Lurie told McElhenney: “It forces you to have to really think through a lot of decisions and think about things not just in the short term but what is going to gratify me for the next month of my life.

“What is best for the team over the course of the next 12 months, 24 months, five years. And what are your values in terms of what kind of coach do you want? What kind of collaboration do you want? What kind of culture do you want?

“That to me is something I never thought about as a fan but then you’ve also got to identify where do you think the trajectory is going to go? And that’s where the hard decisions are.

“If you thought you were on an upward trajectory and you had a down year, then you’d say ‘ok that was a down year but really we’re on an upward trajectory with that coach and with that coaching staff’ then you can continue.

“If you reach the conclusion that you think you’re on a downward trajectory and you needed fresh leadership, then you got to make a change and don’t be afraid to make a change but at the same time, don’t be afraid to keep a great coach.”

Of course, alongside Ryan Reynolds, the owners stuck with Parkinson and the rest, as they say, is now history.

Wrexham have the chance to change their fortunes in Sheffield Wednesday

If there was any pressure building on Parkinson, Sheffield Wednesday are probably the opponent you would hand-pick in the Championship currently.

Whilst there are no easy games at this level, the Yorkshire outfit are in financial turmoil and are unable to make any new signings following their transfer embargo.

Parkinson’s Championship record has been well documented but Wrexham have not played badly in their opening two defeats.

Wrexham have a number of injury concerns but will fancy their chances of picking up three points in the encounter and building some confidence.

If they can cut out the uncharacteristic mistakes at the back and be more clinical at the other end of the pitch, they will feel a lot better about themselves come Saturday evening.
