A chaotic game between Wrexham and Sheffield United led to one Blades player taking aim at the Red Dragons by labelling them as ‘disrespectful’.
The cup competitions have housed many memorable moments for Wrexham in recent years, and there is every chance that more memories can be created this season for the Red Dragons.
Wrexham have reached the EFL Cup 3rd round after wins against both Hull City and Preston North End, which has opened up the prospect of a run in the competition.
The Red Dragons have surprised many in cup competitions in the past, but it once got heated in an encounter with Sheffield United, who were high-flying in the Championship at the time.
It was a feisty match, which saw Sheffield United edge the Red Dragons in a replay, but off-field tension brewed, which led to Wrexham being branded as ‘disrespectful’.

Wrexham were once slated following cup tie vs Sheffield United
In the aftermath of an FA Cup 4th round, which was brought to a replay at Bramall Lane after Wrexham held Sheffield United 3-3 at the Racecourse Ground, the Red Dragons were targeted by an opposition player.
Billy Sharp, who bagged Sheffield United’s second goal of three in a 3-1 victory in the 94th minute, took aim at Wrexham and the players, stating that he was ‘glad’ to beat them.
“I think they’ve been disrespectful with a few things before the game, thinking they were already through,” said Sharp back in 2022. “I’m glad we’ve beaten them.”
“They’re doing well in their league, we’re doing well in ours, and I wasn’t happy with a few of their players tonight.”
When asked what he specifically was not happy with, Sharp replied: “I wasn’t happy with the way they’ve been as a club before the game, eyeing up Spurs, they hadn’t even beaten us.”
Sheffield United were given a huge surprise in the reverse fixtures as, while they gained the lead in the 50th minute, Paul Mullin hit back in the 59th minute, stunning them until Sharp’s late winner for the Blades.

How Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac responded following the Sheffield United defeat
While it was disappointing to bow out of the FA Cup in such late fashion, the fact that a National League side were able to go toe-to-toe with high-flying Championship opposition was an achievement in itself, and Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac showed their support as a result.
Reacting on social media to the defeat, Ryan said: “So proud of these boys. And the 4000 plus away supporters who gave it all.”
Rob then added: “I could not be more proud of those men than I am right now. They gave it absolutely everything.”
Years later, Wrexham will finally get their opportunity to hit back at Sheffield United, this time in the league.
