Wrexham have snapped up Callum Doyle from Manchester City in a deal which has impressed EFL pundit Gregor Robertson.

Last Thursday, Wrexham completed the signing of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town.

That move became Wrexham’s new record transfer, with the Welsh forward joining for around £7.5million rising to £10million.

Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds continue to invest in new signings, though, with Wrexham signing Callum Doyle on Thursday night.

Doyle penned a four-year deal with Wrexham on Thursday, joining in a deal believed to be worth up to around £7.5million to £8million.

Doyle has spent the last four seasons out on loan away from Manchester City, and is now ready to put down some roots in North Wales.

EFL pundit on Callum Doyle to Wrexham

This looks to be a huge coup for Wrexham.

Doyle is not only a major talent for the future at just 21, but he also has bags of Championship experience under his belt.

Doyle has spent the last three seasons with Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City, so he should slot right back into Championship action.

Rangers also wanted to sign Doyle, but Wrexham have managed to win the race.

Wrexham have invested significant money in Doyle, and EFL pundit Gregor Robertson has praised the move.

Speaking on The Game podcast, before the Doyle deal was confirmed, Robertson suggested that this move is a ‘brilliant’ deal for Wrexham.

Robertson highlighted that Doyle is a ‘really classy’ defender who possesses ‘enormous’ experience for his age.

The former left-back added that Doyle has enjoyed great success in his loan spells and will be a ‘great signing’ for Wrexham.

“Doyle would be a brilliant signing,” said Robertson.

“Left-footed, really classy defender with an enormous amount of experience for someone who is 21. And he’s had success – he was promoted from League One with Sunderland on loan, when he must have been 18.

“He made the play-offs with Coventry the next season, won the Championship with Leicester the following season, last season at Norwich, he got 40 games under his belt, wasn’t quite as successful, but that would be a great signing,” he added.

Where Callum Doyle fits in for Wrexham

Doyle’s fit at Wrexham seems fairly clear, as he will almost certainly slot in as the left-sided centre-back in Parkinson’s back three.

Doyle is a natural left-footer and has spent time playing as a centre-back or left-back, so that role on the left of Wrexham’s back three looks perfect.

Thomas O’Connor has previously operated in that role for Wrexham, but appears to have slipped down the pecking order.

Lewis Brunt featured on the left of Wrexham’s back three last season, but he is a natural right-footer and may now lose his spot to Doyle.

The youthful Doyle and Max Cleworth playing either side of the experienced Conor Coady looks to be a fine blend at the back for Wrexham, and Parkinson may be tempted to field that defence against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
