Wrexham are advancing in their pursuit of Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas.

Wrexham are close to signing Koumas on loan and the 19-year-old would become the club’s ninth signing of the summer.

The winger has featured for Liverpool’s first-team in a number of cup competitions and spent last season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship.

With Phil Parkinson keen to add further quality and energy to his squad, Wrexham Insider spoke to Liverpool expert Freddie Dorman about what Koumas may bring to North Wales.

Liverpool expert Freddie Dorman tells Wrexham fans what they can expect from Lewis Koumas

Koumas is known for his versatility across the front line and under Steven Schumacher at Stoke City played on both wings and in a centre forward role.

Parkinson has already added the likes of Ryan Hardie and Kieffer Moore to his attacking options and the question is where Koumas would fit into the side.

Wrexham have rarely ventured into the loan market under Parkinson and Dorman has revealed why Koumas is set to change the usual stance of the Red Dragons boss.

What strengths does Lewis Koumas possess?

He is quick, direct and really good with the ball at his feet. He also has a good shot on him to be honest, has all the talent even though he is just 19.

He is also just so confident and does not look out of place with a first team. The other thing our Under 21s manager said (Rob Page) is just that he has the right attitude and just likes to get the team on the front foot, starts attacks and is capable of finishing them off too.

What weaknesses does Lewis Koumas have?

Hard to tell with weaknesses, there is the obvious one of like his build, maybe needs to get a little stronger but of course that will come with time.

Maybe at times he just needs to release the ball a little earlier, but genuinely, it is hard to tell as he looks really sharp and taking the ball off him is so hard already.

How do Liverpool view Koumas for the future?

He is held in high regard at Liverpool but the pathway is so competitive that chances might be hard to come by. Only signed a long-term deal last summer so either they think he’ll get a chance or that they can get decent money for him.

He is now considered above the likes of Kaide Gordon though despite him being a top talent for a while, he would also likely get minutes in the cup if he stayed.

Wrexham play a 3-5-2 system, where do you see him fitting in?

He isn’t really a wing-back and is much better in the attacking third. Likes to beat his man and get a cross into the box, however, so that might be useful.

His energy and work-rate would mean he could play there, he isn’t the type of player to complain, but they should try play him on the wing or even at striker. He has played up top before and did OK, but right-wing is where he would be best.

Can you rate him as a signing out of 10 for Wrexham?

As he would be on loan, I’d give the move about a 7/10. He would be a great option to bring on, especially against a tiring defence, and he might even get a regular spot. Only worry is the formation.

Stoke fans absolutely loved him, will just be a fan-favourite wherever he goes as he gives his all and leaves everything on the pitch

Lewis Koumas record in the Championship

Parkinson has deliberately added players with lots of Championship experience this summer, aside from the capture of Liberato Cacace.

Koumas enjoyed a successful season with the Potters last campaign and showed signs that he is more than capable of producing the goods in the second tier.

As mentioned by Dorman, the fact that Koumas likes to operate on the wing means that Parkinson could be considering a change of formation this season, or at least being open to changing things up within games.

His rigid 3-5-2 approach has brought Wrexham to this point, but there is the feeling he will need to be more flexible, especially if his side are chasing a game.
