Liverpool’s Owen Beck can follow in his legendary family member’s footsteps by completing Wrexham transfer

Wrexham snapped up a new left wing-back last summer but could now move to sign another in this transfer window.

James McClean has been an inspired signing for Wrexham, both as a player and as a leader.

Phil Parkinson still moved for another left wing-back last summer as Sebastian Revan joined Wrexham from Aston Villa.

Revan failed to shine in his debut Wrexham campaign, and McClean continues as Parkinson’s first-choice left wing-back.

Parkinson could add another new face in that area, though, with reports suggesting Wrexham are keen on Liverpool’s Owen Beck.

Beck is back at Anfield after a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers, and a temporary switch to the STōK Cae Ras is being eyed.

Owen Beck could follow in Ian Rush’s footsteps

Beck would be a superb addition as competition for McClean, though a deal may raise question marks over the futures of Revan and Jacob Mendy.

The 22-year-old has only played three times for Liverpool’s first team, but made 24 Championship appearances for Blackburn last term.

Injuries hampered Beck in the second half of the season and Liverpool may want him to gain more Championship experience.

A move to Wrexham would be emotional enough for Beck, who was born in Wrexham and could make a homecoming this summer.

An added layer comes in Beck’s family tree, as the left wing-back could have the chance to follow in the footsteps of his great-uncle Ian Rush.

Rush joined Wrexham at the back end of his career, signing on back in 1998 at the age of 37.

A legendary goalscorer for Liverpool and Wales, Rush failed to find the net for Wrexham before hanging up his boots in 2000.

Beck would be joining Wrexham with a bright future ahead of him rather than arriving at the back end of his career, but he could pull on the famous red Wrexham shirt just like his legendary great-uncle if Parkinson can secure his signature.

Owen Beck on Ian Rush

Beck has previously been quizzed on Rush and the impact the former striker has had on his career.

Speaking to The Independent in 2021, Beck noted that Rush gives him a lot of advice and the pair speak regularly.

Beck admitted that Rush mostly gave him mental advice, alongside encouraging him to work hard and never give up.

“As soon as I started playing football he’s given me advice and I speak to him a lot,” said Beck.

“He’s done it himself and he knows what to say. It’s definitely helped me on my journey. He was a striker and I’m a full-back, so position-wise it’s different, but the advice he gives more is more mentally.

“His main advice is working hard and never giving up. You need to be concentrated every day training alongside the best players,” he added.

Beck may never reach Rush’s level of acclaim at Liverpool, but he has a fine club career and plenty of Wales caps ahead of him.

A spell with Wrexham would surely only help Beck’s development, both in terms of playing more Championship action and learning from somebody like McClean.

Beck is sure to have rival interest in the Championship, but a move to Wrexham should be one of his top priorities as he considers another loan move this summer.
