Wrexham named three strikers on the bench against Shrewsbury Town on Thursday night but Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was not one of them.

Wrexham missed a golden chance to go top of League One with another disappointing away performance.

After 12 days without a game, Wrexham really needed to turn up away at rivals Shrewsbury Town.

Instead, we saw another disappointing Wrexham away showing as the struggling Shrews

Parkinson had real firepower on his bench having named three strikers – Paul Mullin, Modou Faal and Jack Marriott – as substitutes.

None of them could save Wrexham though, despite all ending up on the pitch together at the end of the game, as Parkinson fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat.

Burton Albion boss on Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Just before kick off at Croud Meadow, Wrexham confirmed a departure from Parkinson’s squad.

Wrexham fans will have noticed that whilst Parkinson named three strikers on the bench, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was not one of them.

The Icelandic forward joined Wrexham on a free transfer in October having been released by Bolton Wanderers last summer.

Parkinson admitted that Bolton connections helped him land Bodvarsson as Wrexham signed him on a deal until January.

The exact date of Bodvarsson’s contract expiring was unknown but the writing has been on the wall after playing just 91 League One minutes across four substitute appearances.

Wrexham have now parted ways with Bodvarsson, paving the way for him to join League One rivals Burton Albion.

Bodvarsson has joined the Brewers on a ‘short-term contract’ and goes straight in their squad to face Crawley Town this weekend.

Burton boss Gary Bowyer has told the club’s official website that he is ‘delighted’ to have attracted a player of Bodvarsson’s quality.

Bowyer believes that Bodvarsson is going to be so ‘valuable’ at the Pirelli Stadium, suggesting that he has landed a real coup.

“I’m absolutely delighted. To have attracted somebody of his experience and his quality is a real credit to everybody. We can’t wait for him to get going because he’s going to be such a valuable player for us,” said Bowyer.

Wrexham fans may see hint in Bodvarsson exit

Bodvarsson’s exit at this point in the window may just leave Wrexham fans believing that another striker is coming in.

Wrexham want to sign another striker according to reports and will hope to secure one in this window.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith is a Wrexham target but it’s unclear whether that deal can be done quickly.

Bodvarsson’s exit may just point towards Wrexham being confident of another striking addition arriving soon.

That will be the hope anyway with Wrexham certainly lacking an attacking spark against Shrewsbury on Thursday night.
