Wrexham are searching for a new striker this summer and Phil Parkinson appears to be returning for one of his summer targets.

Wrexham sit third in League One and will have dreams of kicking on to achieve a third promotion in a row.

Wycombe Wanderers have lost boss Matt Bloomfield and are left reeling after losing key loanees this month.

Wrexham must now seize this opportunity and strengthen in the January window – especially having watched Huddersfield Town splash the cash on Joe Taylor.

There is a real chance for Wrexham to kick on and secure automatic promotion with potential signings needed.

Reports suggest that Wrexham want to sign a proven Championship striker and a familiar name has again been mentioned.

Wrexham ready to move for Championship striker

A number of names have been speculated with Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford recently linked with Wrexham.

The Sheffield Star now report that Wrexham remain interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith.

Reports over the summer highlighted that Wrexham held talks to sign Smith before the summer transfer deadline.

The interest hasn’t disappeared as it’s now suggested that Wrexham are expected to ‘test the waters’ with a move for Smith this month.

Smith is out of contract at the end of the season and Wrexham may now be willing to move for the striker right now.

Wednesday could be tempted to cash in on Smith before he leaves for nothing this summer.

A tall and physical striker at 6ft 3in tall, Smith figures to be competition for Ollie Palmer if Wrexham can strike a deal.

Michael Smith record analysed

Smith has arguably been something of a late bloomer outside of 26 goals in 72 games for Swindon Town between 2014 and 2016.

The Wallsend-born forward couldn’t replicate that form with Portsmouth or Bury but smashed 61 goals in 210 games for Rotherham United.

Steve Evans hailed Smith as ‘brilliant’ for the Millers whilst speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser.

“I love ‘Smudge’. He was brilliant for Rotherham United, a handful against my teams when he played against them,” said Evans.

Smith decided to quit Rotherham at the end of his contract in 2022, joining their Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

17 goals in 39 games at League One level fired Wednesday to promotion – something Wrexham will hope to see him replicate if a deal can be done.

Nine goals in 56 Championship games perhaps isn’t quite as impressive but Smith is an experienced front man who could give Wrexham a big push towards promotion.
