Parkinson target in new contract talks but Wrexham still have bargain opportunity after club-record pursuit

Wrexham added two new faces in January but were unable to pull off a club-record transfer to bolster Phil Parkinson’s squad.

Wrexham needed some additions in the winter window but the two signings were left very, very late in the day.

Phil Parkinson pounced to land a new right wing back with Luke Bolton arriving from fellow League Two side Salford City.

Striker Jack Marriott also arrived, dropping down to League Two from League One side Fleetwood Town.

Marriott now finds himself back in League One again having won promotion with Wrexham whilst Fleetwood prepare for life in League Two following relegation.

Bolton and Marriott didn’t nail down starting roles before the season ended but played their part as Wrexham achieved a second-place finish.

The attention is now turning to the summer window but Wrexham may be tempted to look back at one target who slipped through the net in January.

Jamie Lindsay could leave Wrexham

Rumours were flying around on transfer deadline day suggesting that Wrexham were pushing to finalise a club-record transfer for Rotherham United midfielder Jamie Lindsay.

Wrexham’s transfer record is still the £300,000 paid to sign Ollie Palmer from AFC Wimbledon.

Parkinson admitted that Wrexham missed out on a signing late on deadline day – and it was thought to be Lindsay.

The Scottish midfielder missed out on a move to the STōK Cae Ras but there could still be scope for a summer move.

Lindsay is out of contract this summer and Rotherham have confirmed that they are still in talks over a new deal.

The Millers have suffered relegation to League One and will be facing Wrexham next season.

New Rotherham boss Steve Evans seemingly wants to keep hold of Lindsay but there is a chance for Wrexham to swoop in.

That Rotherham don’t have a deal in place at this stage in his contract suggests there is a real chance to tempt Lindsay away.

Whether Wrexham are still interested is unclear but we would imagine that Lindsay is at least on the radar.

The 28-year-old has played more than 150 times for Rotherham across two League One campaigns and three Championship seasons.

Wrexham have focused on signing players from higher leagues and Lindsay certainly fits the bill.

Having been so willing to strike a club-record deal in January, it would be more of a surprise if Wrexham weren’t in the race for Lindsay – and his contract status will certainly have been noted inside the STōK Cae Ras.

Midfield additions crucial for Wrexham

Whether it’s Lindsay or somebody else, Wrexham certainly need midfield additions this summer.

Wrexham have already confirmed that Luke Young is on his way out of the club at the end of his contract this summer.

Andy Cannon, George Evans and Elliot Lee can form a superb midfield trio but depth and competition.

Thomas O’Connor may be utilised more in defence next season and it’s unclear just how big of a role Jordan Davies will have moving forward.

James Jones and James McClean offer options in midfield too but adding another player with recent League One experience – like Lindsay – could be vital.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were ready to pay decent money for Lindsay just a few months ago; they now have a real chance to land him on a free transfer after all.
