Phil Parkinson claims McElhenney and Reynolds have ‘put a call in’ to help Wrexham in mystery transfer race

Wrexham are closing in on a second signing of the summer transfer window but Phil Parkinson may have other irons in the fire.

Monday is proving to be a busy day for Wrexham.

Ryan Hardie’s move to Wrexham was confirmed two Mondays ago, as the striker arrived from Plymouth Argyle.

Last Monday saw Paul Mullin complete his move to Wigan Athletic, joining the League One side on loan for the season.

This Monday could see another deal, with Danny Ward undergoing a medical at Wrexham in the coming hours.

Wrexham may be in a position to confirm Ward’s arrival on Monday evening, handing Parkinson his second addition of the summer.

Phil Parkinson on Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham pull

Wrexham will view Ward as competition for Arthur Okonkwo as the Welsh goalkeeper makes a return home.

Leicester City have released Ward, paving the way for a free transfer return to the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham may have another potential signing in the works, though, as Phil Parkinson spoke to Stuff in New Zealand about his transfer pursuits.

Parkinson admitted that Wrexham are currently trying to sign a player who has a lot of interest from other clubs.

In an attempt to finalise the deal, Parkinson has called in Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for some help.

McElhenney and Reynolds have now called the player in question, attempting to sell the mystery target on a move to the STōK Cae Ras.

“We’re looking to sign a player and we’ve got a lot of competition to get the signature,” said Parkinson.

“I spoke to Rob and Ryan about it so they put a call in to the player as well, explained the back story and why we wanted them,” he added.

Personal touch from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has been common

Wrexham fans will be wondering just who Parkinson is discussing here.

It’s probably easier to name the players who haven’t been linked with Wrexham this summer, so we can’t even begin to guess who Parkinson is pushing to sign.

One thing we can touch on is how McElhenney and Reynolds get involved in Wrexham’s transfer business.

Reynolds accepts that other people know more about football than he does, so he leaves the recruitment to others.

However, McElhenney and Reynolds take an active role in speaking to potential signings and helping secure deals.

Sam Smith spoke to McElhenney and Reynolds as he joined Wrexham from Reading, admitting that it was surreal to speak to them.

That personal touch from ownership isn’t common across the game, but it’s certainly a regular occurrence at Wrexham – and may just help land another signing this summer.
