Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer was the rather unexpected hero as he scored twice to leave Hull City shell-shocked on Tuesday night.

Wrexham lost at Southampton last weekend and were looking to hit back with Carabao Cup success against Hull City.

With just minutes to play, Wrexham appeared to be on the verge of another defeat as Hull took a 3-1 lead into injury time.

Anybody who has watched Wrexham in recent years should know not to leave early, as Phil Parkinson’s side have a penchant for late comebacks.

That was the case again on Tuesday, with Ollie Palmer coming off the bench to score two brilliant headers in stoppage time.

Wrexham forced a 3-3 draw with Hull before beating them on penalties, with Palmer also scoring from the spot to dump the Tigers out.

Phil Parkinson on Ollie Palmer’s Wrexham future

This was a cameo to remember for Wrexham fans, with Palmer enjoying an emotional moment in front of the Tech End.

Palmer has been made available by Wrexham, and some may have wondered if he would ever score at the STōK Cae Ras again.

The giant striker stepped up when called upon and showed that he can still make an impact in the Wrexham attack.

Parkinson may still want to move Palmer on, but that doesn’t mean that the feeling is reciprocated.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Parkinson admitted that Palmer still ‘wants to stay’ at Wrexham and be part of the club’s Championship journey.

Parkinson noted that Wrexham will ‘see how we go on’ before the transfer deadline, seemingly refusing to confirm that Palmer could still have a future after deciding to let him go.

Parkinson praised Palmer as an ‘iconic’ player and hailed his attitude around the Wrexham group even after being told his role would be heavily impacted.

“I’m so pleased for him because he’s been an iconic player for us over the last three or four years, and the supporters love him,” said Parkinson.

“When we made the decision to bring players in in January, I explained why I felt we needed to add an extra impetus into the team – and it worked because we got promotion and the two up front did really well.

“But he kept working on the training pitch and kept contributing in the dressing room. I’ve always said to him that you’ve got as much respect for that as what you’ve done in terms of as a player.

“Of course, he wants to stay and be a part of it, and we’ll see how we go on in the next few weeks of the transfer window. I don’t think Ollie could have done much more tonight, and that impact from the bench we’ve seen over many years is so important,” he added.

Ollie Palmer may have put himself in the shop window

Wrexham fans loved seeing Palmer find the net while making himself the hero in another STōK Cae Ras comeback.

Kieffer Moore’s injury may impact Parkinson’s plans for Palmer, but it currently seems that he will still be allowed to go if an offer comes in.

Palmer may hope that his display changes Parkinson’s mind, but he may also find that potential suitors are even more eager to come forward.

Tuesday’s game summed up Palmer’s game: get the ball in the box, and he can cause mayhem with his aerial ability.

League One and League Two teams are surely calling Wrexham to discuss a potential deal, and Palmer may soon face the very real decision of whether to stay and snub other offers or close the book on his fantastic Wrexham career.
