Phil Parkinson shares transfer update amid ‘unique’ Wrexham situation

Wrexham have completed three signings this summer and Phil Parkinson is keen to bring in a few more additions before the League One season starts.

Back-to-back promotions was a quite incredible achievement for Wrexham but Phil Parkinson knew the reality; he needed to improve his squad.

A number of players were released this summer and Wrexham have so far managed to bring in three additions after somewhat clearing the decks.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was the major addition, penning a permanent deal at the STōK Cae Ras after impressing on loan last season.

That was a major coup for Wrexham and defender Lewis Brunt was the next to arrive, joining on a permanent basis from Leicester City.

Mansfield Town were left disappointed with that deal before Wrexham pounced to snap up George Dobson on a free transfer.

The midfielder annulled his pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar and joins Wrexham after ending his Charlton Athletic deal.

Phil Parkinson on new Wrexham signings

Wrexham still have plenty of work to do though, especially with the new League One season less than a month away.

Those three new signings will now head on Wrexham’s US tour, but new signings may become a little trickier once everybody heads to the States.

Last week, Parkinson noted that he ‘wouldn’t rule out’ signings before facing Hanley Town on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham won that pre-season friendly 5-1 but there were no new deals done before kick off.

Wrexham jet off to America this week ahead of facing Bournemouth on Sunday, so it looks like there weren’t be any new faces on the flight.

Parkinson has now commented on transfers again and still seems hopeful of getting deals done soon enough.

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson admitted that Wrexham are ‘working on’ a couple of potential additions.

Parkinson acknowledges that Wrexham need to get business done before the starts – not just before the window closes.

Parkinson is happy to be patient and attempt to get the right players in though, believing that extra work needs to be done as players would be joining a ‘unique club’ in Wrexham.

The publicity, fame and TV spotlight aren’t for everybody and Wrexham are clearly taking a close look at whether key targets can handle the situation.

“We are working on one or two things,” said Parkinson. “There is still work to be done in the squad before the season starts, everybody knows that, but I am very pleased with the lads we have brought in so far. They are really strong additions to what we have got and as ever, we are trying to select the players which we feel are right for this group and the club.”

“That is a careful selection process because this is quite a unique club to be at for many reasons and I want to make sure that the ones who come in with us are going to integrate quickly with the group but also add something,” he added.

Defensive additions still wanted

Wrexham have landed a defender in Brunt and one of his major selling points is his versatility.

Brunt can operate across the back line and even in midfield, handing ideal flexibility for Parkinson moving forward.

We still believe that Wrexham need defensive signings though, having let a number of centre backs go this summer.

Aaron Hayden and Ben Tozer were released after promotion and have already joined Carlisle United and Forest Green Rovers respectively.

Jordan Tunnicliffe is under contract despite being released and is still expected to leave one way or another this summer.

Wrexham will have the likes of Brunt, Eoghan O’Connell, Max Cleworth, Will Boyle and Thomas O’Connor to call upon, but more additions will be wanted at the back.

That could be a focus for Wrexham in the coming weeks, but don’t be surprised to see another forward arrive after Paul Mullin’s surgery.
