Wrexham now battling Middlesbrough in race to sign ‘fantastic’ defender from Championship rivals

Wrexham already have two impressive right wing-backs but Phil Parkinson now appears to be interested in adding another.

Phil Parkinson has largely stuck with a 3-5-2 system throughout his tenure as Wrexham boss.

Having quality strikers such as Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer has certainly helped Wrexham’s cause, but they have been supplied brilliantly over the years by flying wing-backs.

Ryan Barnett has become a Wrexham star down the right flank having joined from Solihull Moors in 2023.

Down the left side, the likes of James McClean and Jacob Mendy have had huge roles to play in Wrexham’s rise.

Parkinson is set to stick with the wing-backs in the Championship but may look to add yet another option on the right side.

Wrexham show interest in Blackburn Rovers ace Callum Brittain

Sky Sports claim that Wrexham have now expressed an interest in signing Blackburn Rovers defender Callum Brittain.

It’s stated that Championship rivals Derby County and Middlesbrough also want to sign Brittain this summer.

Blackburn don’t want to sell Brittain, but the 27-year-old now has less than a year left on his contract at Ewood Park.

Brittain was hailed as ‘fantastic’ by John Eustace on Rovers’ official website last season, with the former Blackburn boss believing Brittain was becoming one of the Championship’s very top performers.

A significant cash offer could tempt Blackburn into a deal, with Wrexham now facing major competition for his signature.

Brittain spent most of last season playing as a right-back in a four-man defence, but has played as a wing-back in the past.

The former Milton Keynes Dons man has also played on the left side and even as a centre-back in the past, showing off his versatility.

Parkinson may have been attracted to that positional flexibility from Brittain, as signing another right wing-back would seem slightly strange.

Barnett was an assist machine in the first half of last season and only lost his place after Wrexham snapped up Ryan Longman.

Barnett and Longman are two strong right wing-back options for Wrexham, but Parkinson may fancy more flexibility in his squad ahead of the Championship season.

Wrexham could reunite three former Blackburn teammates

Links to Brittain throw up more speculation surrounding Wrexham’s interest in a member of last season’s Blackburn squad.

Wrexham are already keen on Lewis Travis, with the Blackburn captain in a similar boat to Brittain in terms of his contract.

Travis can leave Rovers for nothing in a year’s time, and Wrexham may be preparing to pounce this summer.

Wrexham are also eyeing Owen Beck, who spent last season on loan at Blackburn from Liverpool.

The Wrexham-born ace would be brought in as a left wing-back for Wrexham, meaning there is a chance that we could see Beck and Brittain on the flanks for Wrexham, just as they were for Rovers last season.
