The list of Wrexham transfer targets continues to grow, with the latest to join the list being someone who was once likened to Welsh legend Gareth Bale.

Wrexham will replace Cardiff City in the Championship next season. The Dragons make their return to the second tier of English football for the first time in more than 40 years after being promoted from League One.

Phil Parkinson may yet have his work cut out in the summer and in the 2025/26 season. There’s some really big-hitters and some really big-spenders in the second tier but as ever, Wrexham will back themselves.

Three-straight promotions has landed them here and they’ll be gunning to stay. And already the club has started to cast their transfer net out with several players linked with moves to Wrexham so far.

Most are concentrated in the attacking department with the latest name to be linked being Cardiff City winger Ollie Tanner.

Why Wrexham transfer target Ollie Tanner once rejected a move to Spurs

Wrexham now have three Cardiff players on their radar in Tanner, Callum Robinson, and also Isaak Davies. Tanner, a 23-year-old right winger who started out in the non-league, scored twice and assisted twice in 29 Championship games for the Bluebirds in 2024/25.

It’s now been revealed to Wrexham Insider that Wrexham could sign Tanner in the summer transfer window. It would be a move that keeps him in the Championship and keeps him close to the Premier League, where he might have ended up a few years ago.

When playing for non-league Lewes, Spurs came calling. The North Londoners agreed a deal to sign Tanner from Lewes but he actually turned the move down, as Tanner wanted to keep on playing regular first-team football.

That’s when Cardiff City came calling, and Tanner moved to Wales.

Ollie Tanner plays like Gareth Bale, says former manager

Tanner’s former manager at Lewes, Tony Russell, is a huge fan of the Bromley-born winger. So much so that he even compared Tanner to Welsh football icon Gareth Bale in the way that he runs and plays.

Russell told WalesOnline previously: “He is very similar to the way Gareth Bale plays. He is so fast with the ball, he is so technically good, he just straightens up and runs, before you know it he’s past you. He is such a powerful runner with the ball.”

But Tanner has struggled to live up to the hype since his move to Cardiff City in 2022. In 73 total games for the club he’s scored just four goals, assisting the same amount. But he’s proved his work ethic on the pitch and he’s also proved versatile, able to play a bit deeper or even on the left flank.

In a more dynamic and attacking Wrexham side, Tanner could be one who flourishes. Leaving Cardiff City for Wrexham though could cause a bit of an upset.
