Wrexham may have taken a step closer to signing one of their reported summer targets. And what a signing it would be.

Phil Parkinson has a clear plan in place for Wrexham this summer. Parkinson says Wrexham won’t sign any superstars nor any egos and he’ll instead look to keep the dressing room as positive as possible.

It’s a strategy that’s seen the club earn promotion in each of the last three seasons with Wrexham now gearing up for a Championship campaign after finishing 2nd in League One in 2024/25.

Wrexham have several transfer targets and it looks like Parkinson is really focusing on signing some new attacking players. Names like Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhardt, Ryan Hardie and Callum Robinson have all been linked with a move to the Racecourse so far.

So too has Jamie Vardy. The former England man is leaving Leicester City as a free agent this summer and Wrexham have been linked with a move for Vardy.

Despite now being 38 years old, Vardy looks set to become hot property in the transfer market this summer. He’s scored eight Premier League goals in a rather woeful Leicester City side this season and there’s plenty enough teams being linked, with Leeds United one being mentioned.

But more and more reports are linking Vardy with a move to the MLS. Writing in a BBC Sport Q&A, journalist Nick Mashiter has discussed the prospect of Vardy linking up with former Foxes boss Dean Smith at Charlotte FC.

Mashiter wrote: “Vardy enjoyed a good relationship with Dean Smith during his brief spell at Leicester, with the former Foxes boss now doing well with Charlotte in the MLS. He was eager to sign Vardy last summer so don’t be surprised if there is interest there, although you can rule out any links to Wolves.

“The 38-year-old will likely have to take a pay cut for his next move but there is a clear inner belief that he can still play in the Premier League.”

Wolves move ruled out for Jamie Vardy, but Wrexham face stiff MLS competition

It’s been claimed that Vardy doesn’t want to play for another Championship team next season as he doesn’t want to go up against his beloved Leicester City.

But links to Wrexham are persisting and the right project could still entice him. Wrexham could well be that project with Rio Ferdinand previously backing Vardy to join Wrexham, and cap his Hollywood career with a Hollywood move.

The Smith connection at Charlotte though could be an interesting one to keep an eye on. And for Vardy, an MLS move now could be the start of a very exciting final chapter for him.

He’s clearly still got ability and he could yet enjoy a few good seasons out in the States. It’s one for Wrexham to keep an eye on still, but it’s looking like a tricky pursuit for Parkinson.
