Wrexham yet to follow League One transfer trend, despite Ryan Reynolds’ exciting comment in 2022

Wrexham travel to take on Exeter City this weekend and will be hoping for another win in the race for promotion from League One.

Wrexham beat Stockport County last weekend, securing a 1-0 win at the STōK Cae Ras.

Phil Parkinson’s side sit second in the League One table, three points ahead of nearest challengers Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham could land a third straight promotion and, even if second place can’t be secured, Parkinson will have the play-offs to fall back on.

Promotion to the Championship would be huge for the Wrexham project, offering more ways for the club to develop.

That will involve improving the infrastructure around the club but potentially expanding the transfer reach in future transfer windows as well.

Wrexham yet to explore foreign markets

Much of Parkinson’s business has centred around signing experienced performers who know English football well.

Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher, Jack Marriott, George Evans, Matty James, James McClean… the list goes on.

Wrexham have yet to bring in a signing directly from overseas, though, instead preferring to stick to the UK market.

Foreign players have been signed but Jacob Mendy arrived from Boreham Wood, Modou Faal came in from West Bromwich Albion, and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s previous club was Bolton Wanderers.

League One has seen a real influx of signings from foreign markets in recent times.

Wycombe Wanderers signed Danish defender Anders Hagelskjaer in January before adding compatriot Magnus Westergaard.

Wrexham are now the only team in the top seven places of the League One table not to have shopped abroad this season.

Birmingham City, Wycombe, Charlton Athletic, Stockport County, Bolton Wanderers and Huddersfield Town have all looked overseas for new recruits.

Barnsley, Lincoln City, Peterborough United, Burton Albion and Crawley Town have also shopped around the world since the end of last season.

Wrexham are yet to get involved in this trend, but the time will surely come down the line.

Wrexham heroes Dennis Lawrence and Carlos Edwards came in from Trinidad and Tobago many years ago, and there are surely plenty of players all over the world who want to be part of the Wrexham journey.

Finding the right ones is the hard part, but with more and more Championship and League One clubs shopping abroad now, Wrexham will surely dip into foreign markets down the line.

Ryan Reynolds commented on foreign signings

Perhaps that time will be this summer – especially if Wrexham win promotion.

Parkinson is undoubtedly inundated with offers from agents across the globe but has, understandably, focused on players with English football experience.

Ryan Reynolds has commented on this situation before as Wrexham battled for promotion from the National League in 2022.

Featured on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ (Season One, episode 18), Shaun Harvey explained how promotion would help Wrexham recruit players.

Reynolds suggested that Wrexham would be able to go abroad and sign players from anywhere in world, such as Uruguay.

“The great thing about going up a league is that it avails us to players that aren’t English,” said Reynolds.

“We can go to Uruguay and get a player,” he added.

That opportunity certainly excited Reynolds, and Wrexham fans surely felt encouraged too, believing that some foreign additions would be coming.

Three years on, Wrexham are yet to make that move, but Reynolds would seemingly be on board with spending cash on foreign imports to take Wrexham forward if the opportunity arises.
