Wrexham made it four wins in a row by beating League One strugglers Burton Albion in testing conditions on Saturday afternoon.

Home comforts have certainly helped Wrexham in recent weeks.

Defeat to Stockport County has been followed up by three straight home wins over Exeter City, Lincoln City and Barnsley.

Phil Parkinson has brought up 200 home points at Wrexham but had to hit the road to take on Burton Albion on Saturday.

Storm Darragh be damned, Wrexham players, staff and fans just about made it to the Pirelli Stadium amid treacherous conditions.

Wrexham only needed one goal to win it as Elliot Lee’s corner was picked up by the wind and flew into the net via the post, securing another three points.

Burton Albion defender on ‘freak’ Wrexham goal

Perhaps this was a little fortuitous and an indication of how fortunes differ at the top and bottom.

When you’re down at the bottom, like Burton Albion, these moments just seem to go against you.

Wrexham, riding high in second place, benefited from the wind carrying Lee’s corner into the net and sparking wild celebrations.

Wrexham fans praised Lee on social media as his goal handed Parkinson another win.

There was almost another such moment as an innocuous ball into the box by Thomas O’Connor almost found its way into the net with the wind wreaking absolute havoc.

Burton Albion defender Udoka Godwin-Malife has now offered his view on Saturday’s game – and Wrexham’s winning goal.

Godwin-Malife feels that Burton were worth a point but could do nothing about such a ‘freakish’ Wrexham winner from Lee.

The defender added that the goal was a ‘punch in the ribs’ and feels that a bizarre goal was the only way either side was going to lose.

“I feel like large parts of the game, you could see that it had 0-0 written all over it,” said Godwin-Malife.

“The only that was going to take the game away from us – or them – was a freakish goal like that, it’s just unfortunate it was against us.

“It’s a punch in the ribs at the time, it’s deflating because you work so hard, you put in such a good defensive performance and going forward as well, we looked threatening.

“You looked at stages of the game and thought… you know what, 0-0 is probably a fair result but there’s nothing you can do with a goal  like that,” he added.

Wrexham left with just one more away game before 2025

Wrexham’s run of home games has helped build momentum and we now have another double-header at the STōK Cae Ras to look forward to in the coming days.

The EFL Trophy takes centre stage on Tuesday night as Crewe Alexandra arrive for a second-round clash.

Parkinson is likely to rotate his squad before the visit of Cambridge United next weekend, Paul Mullin’s former club.

Wrexham have just one away game left in 2024, travelling to face Bristol Rovers on December 21.

Wrexham then have another home double-header, facing Blackpool on Boxing Day and Wigan Athletic on December 29.

Parkinson has praised Wrexham’s ground staff in recent weeks and they will be needed once again with the fixtures coming thick and fast and the weather deteriorating in these winter months.
