Burton Albion boss points to Wrexham’s finances after 3-0 defeat, makes food bill claim

Wrexham beat Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon, leaving Gary Bowyer to point out the financial gap between the two sides.

Phil Parkinson was furious after Wrexham’s draw at Cambridge United last week, pointing to a contentious penalty decision against his side.

Wrexham had to respond against Burton Albion, but this was a frustrating affair for the best part of 70 minutes.

The Brewers were down to 10 men in the first half as Charlie Webster was sent off after giving George Dobson a nasty injury.

Wrexham toiled in an attempt to break down the Burton back line before Sam Smith produced two great moments, first winning a penalty for Steven Fletcher to score before finding the net himself.

Jack Marriott added number three, handing Wrexham a brilliant 3-0 victory and a big step towards the Championship.

Burton Albion boss on Wrexham finances

Wycombe Wanderers’ victory over Huddersfield Town leaves Wrexham three points clear ahead of a five-game shootout for promotion.

Saturday’s win felt like an enormous result for Wrexham, and the buzz around the STōK Cae Ras was clear.

The end of the season is now in sight, and Wrexham have a real chance to complete a third straight promotion.

Speaking on Burton’s official YouTube channel after Saturday’s game, Bowyer suggested that Wrexham’s food bill is probably more expensive than Burton’s wage bill.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have backed Wrexham handsomely over the last four years, and Bowyer clearly believes that the investment isn’t just on the pitch but off it too.

Bowyer was expecting a fierce challenge against Wrexham but was really disappointed with the three goals his side conceded.

“When you come here, I think their food bill would be more than our wage bill, won’t it? So you knew the challenge that was lying ahead,” said Bowyer.

“The manner of the goals, all three really, with the penalty decision. They are really poor goals to give away at any standard of football,” he added.

Former Wrexham trio hoping to keep Burton up

Wrexham are focused on winning promotion to the Championship, but Burton have other things to worry about right now.

The Brewers sit 21st in the League One table and, as things stand, will be relegated to League Two.

Burton are just three points away from safety and have a game in hand on 20th-placed Bristol Rovers, giving themselves a chance to survive.

Bowyer has not one, not two, but three former Wrexham players to call upon in his push for survival.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, James Jones and Anthony Forde all joined Burton earlier this year, joining Bowyer’s escape attempt.

Forde reunited with Ryan Reynolds before Saturday’s game, and we can be sure that both Reynolds and McElhenney will be wishing him and the other former Wrexham players all the best as Burton battle to avoid the drop.
