Concerning Paul Mullin decision, defence a problem and more – five things learned during Cambridge vs Wrexham

Wrexham were looking to contiue their impeccable run of form on the road when they made the trip to the south of England for a meeting with Cambridge United.

Long gone are the days when Wrexham fans had to fear their side completely collapsing as soon as they played away from the Racecourse Ground.

The Red Dragons’ record on the road has transformed in the last two months, benefiting their promotion chances massively.

Wrexham have climbed above Wycombe Wanderers in the League One table, and a win against Cambridge United would have seen them maintain that spot until at least Saturday.

When all was said and done, Wrexham drew 2-2 with Cambridge United. Here are five things we learned from the meeting.

Why Paul Mullin missed Cambridge United explained

When the team news arrived an hour before kick-off, Paul Mullin was once again left out of the squad.

Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott were selected ahead of the 30-year-old for the 10th League One match in a row.

Wrexham experts explained Mullin’s absence for the tie, simply suggesting he’s fallen heavily down the striker pecking order under Parkinson.

Phil Parkinson favourite eleven becomes clear

Sticking with team selection, it has become clear that after months of experimenting, Parkinson has now landed on his favoured eleven.

The same side that lined out for meetings with Stockport County and Exeter City once again took the pitch against Cambridge.

And with every game now so important at this stage of the season, it seems unlikely the manager will make too many changes going forward.

Paul Mullin isn’t even Wrexham’s fifth-choice striker anymore

After missing out on the matchday squad, it seems Mullin wasn’t even good enough to make the reserve list for the match.

Managers generally select a number of players to travel to away games on standby in the case another player is injured pre-match and needs to be replaced.

Parkinson’s reserve list was revealed on Tuesday evening and it was Modou Faal, not Mullin, who was brought along as Wrexham’s fifth-choice striker.

George Dobson looks back to his best

After signing from Charlton Athletic over the summer, George Dobson enjoyed a prolific first few months at the club.

However, the arrival of Matty James seemed to hamper his form somewhat, with it suggested, and rightly so, that Dobson and James couldn’t play together.

But the duo have been regular features over the last few weeks and are beginning to form a great understanding, with the ex-Charlton man looking much more like the player we saw in the early months of 2024/25.

Defence was a problem for Wrexham

Wrexham have been excellent at the back for much of this season but were unusually shaky on April 1.

Arthur Okonkwo was forced to make some big saves and spilled the ball himself for a nervous moment.

Lewis Brunt gave away a penalty as well in a display that may concern Parkinson going into the final month or so of the campaign.

It was hopefully just a minor blip, however, and Wrexham’s generally solid backline should be much improved on Saturday.
