Wrexham have secured promotion to the Championship after beating Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday evening.

Humphrey Ker was excited as Wycombe Wanderers lost to Leyton Orient – and he wasn’t alone.

News of that result sparked excitement as Wrexham faced a simple equation; win and secure a third straight promotion.

Phil Parkinson saw his side turn in one of the performances of the season, blowing Charlton Athletic away in a crackling atmosphere at the STōK Cae Ras.

Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith set Wrexham on the way to promotion with first-half goals before Smith completed the scoring, handing Wrexham a 3-0 win over Charlton.

The final whistle brought yet another pitch invasion at the STōK Cae Ras as Parkinson completed the hat-trick of promotions in style.

Charlton Athletic fans on Wrexham display

Charlton hammered Wycombe 4-0 last week and presented a major test for Wrexham – especially with promotion on the line.

Wrexham were simply the better side, though, as Parkinson’s men showed intensity and quality from the very first whistle.

Nathan Jones may have called Wrexham a circus, but he could have no complaints about the result as Wrexham turned in a brilliant display.

Charlton fans even moved to praise Wrexham on social media, both for the performance and for clinching promotion.

Here are just some of the reactions from Charlton fans on X as Wrexham secured a superb 3-0 victory…

‘Wrexham were at it from minute – their high press gave us no time on the ball. Fair play to them, can’t argue with the result.’

‘Wrexham were class and fully deserve their promotion. We were ok but a few poor moments at the back and couldn’t break down a top defence at this level.’

‘Fair play to Wrexham, strong side, not our day today. Concerned the injuries have come at the wrong time. But we go again.’

‘Fair play to Wrexham so much better than us just thankful they are not in the play offs, dust ourselves off go again, we would have taken this at Christmas, big few weeks ahead.’

‘Wrexham playing decent football to be fair and get themselves first to the ball a lot. We just don’t look interested. Happy to be in the play offs.’

‘No complaints over this result. Wrexham the better side when it mattered. Set their stall out and never let us settle on the ball and we didn’t deal with their high press. They did our usual game-plan on us and we just didn’t cope with it.’

‘Fair play to Wrexham, outplayed us when it mattered, reset and go again.’

Wrexham avoid League One play-off picture

Wrexham can now look ahead to a party on the road this weekend as Parkinson takes his side to face Lincoln City.

There is nothing riding on this game and Wrexham can start looking ahead to the future.

Rob McElhenney believes there is more success to come for Wrexham, and he will already be thinking about potential additions for the summer.

Wrexham will be delighted to have secured promotion, but also to have avoided the dread of the play-offs.

Wrexham have tasted play-off heartbreak in the past, and fans can now watch the chaos unfold with no fear or worry.

As things stand, Charlton and Wycombe will meet in the play-offs with Stockport County facing Leyton Orient in the other semi-final.

Reading can still sneak into the top six on the final day but will need a result against Barnsley and a favour from Orient’s opponents Huddersfield Town.

Charlton will look to bounce back after Saturday’s defeat, with Wrexham now over the hill and far away after sealing promotion.
